Principalities; Kiev was a principality, which is a small area ruled by a prince, which grew into the empire
Kiev: City on the Dnieper River, it linked Baltic and Black Seas and was a central trade location which led to the rise of the empire
Boyars: Were landowning nobles that mainly farmed and hunted
Cyrillic Alphabet: Created to convert Russians to Christianity, became the form of writing for them
Russkaia Pravada: Law code made by Yaroslav I
Mongols: Invaded around 1237, took rule for 250 years, required absoulte obedience and massive tribute and isolated Russia and led to its downfall
Vladimir I was grand prince from 980-1015 and was vital in making Orthodox Christianity the state religion of the Kievan Empire. He tested out several religons, like Muslim, Judaism, and Roman Catholicism, until he found Orthodox Christianity after marrying a Byzantine princess. He also increased cultural diffusion to the Byzantine Empire and trade to Constantinople.
Son of Vladimir I, he was known for expanding the empire and building the first school and library in Kiev. He is also know for creating the law code, "Russkaia Pravada". after the empire being at a high during his time, it declined after his death.
