Woah, is this Moral?
Let's look at this from different perspectives...
According to Organ Donation, "Savior siblings" are children created via in vitro fertilization to become a match for a brother or sister in need of a donor.

Full process of how it works:
- The Use of Children as Sibling Donors Is Unethical
Here's how it works:
Video summary/facts:
- A savior sibling "is a child who is born to provide an organ or cell transplant to a sibling that is affected with a fatal disease"
- In almost all cases, the savior sibling is created through IVF (in vitro fertilization) to guarantee a precise match
- After birth of the savior sibling, the umbilical cord is saved and used for the sibling in need
- In some cases, additional transfusions are done to help the sibling in need.
- In almost all cases, the savior sibling helps the patient immensely, oftentimes saving their life.
- At this point, the savior sibling is alive, and they do not murder the baby afterwards. (Contrary to a few rumors)
Some Arguments:
It should be allowed: We must help the sick children in any way we can!
It shouldn't be allowed: People shouldn't be used as body parts and we should respect human dignity.
Let's get more in depth about savior siblings before we show both arguments regarding human reason...
So, from Divine Revelation, we see that the Bible says we should help our siblings out, since we are our brother's/sister's keeper. Yet, more recently, the Catholic Church disagrees with savior siblings because they say it is using a person and disrespecting their human dignity.
Well, let's look at it from another view.
From the article:
According to catholicnewsagency.com, the Bishops’ Conference of France has condemned the manipulation of France's first “savior sibling.”
So the Catholic Church is using the argument that it is against human dignity to use a person, even if it is to cure another person.
Catholic.org goes more in depth on what they said at the conference stating:
"A child born specifically for use, even a noble use, is to turn a child into an object."
Therefore, the Catholic Church does not agree with the idea of savior siblings, because it is using a child, which should be a gift rather than a product. Also, it goes against human dignity, even if it would cure another child in need.
But, if this is from a book written centuries before today, how would it know anything about savior siblings if they didn't exist back then?
From the viewpoint of the Bible, it looks like this is moral, and that a savior sibling should help their sibling.
So lets look at it from another angle in Divine Revelation:
First of all, in most cases, savior siblings are born through IVF (in vitro fertilization) and unwanted embryos are discarded. The Catholic Church opposes both of these things.
But what about savior siblings in general?
"Then the LORD asked Cain, Where is your brother Abel? He answered, 'I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?'
God then said: What have you done? Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!"
This verse tells us that people should care for their brothers and sisters, and also that they are responsible of looking after one another. This relates to savior siblings because it shows that they are responsible of taking care of their siblings.
Since savior siblings did not exist during the time of the Bible, here are some verses that can relate to the idea that a person should be "their brother's/sister's keeper".
"This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother."
"As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace"
This verse is saying at in order for a person to truly love God, they must love their brother or sister. For savior siblings, they should show their love by helping their sibling in need.
This bible verse says that if a person recieves a gift, they should use that gift to serve others. For a savior sibling, they are granted the gift of life and giving life, so they should use this gift to serve others, such as their sibling in need.
*disclaimer, this is a different version of the bible, found on usccb.org, so it is not the common translation
"The way we came to know love was that he laid down his life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.
If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him?
Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth."
This verse says that people should lay down their lives for one another. If you apply this to savior sibings, helping a sibling by giving blood or an organ does not cause the donor to lose their life. It causes discomfort, but in either case, the Bible says that people should give their brothers and sisters compassion, so a savior sibling should support and help out their sibling.
Keep in mind that if these savior siblings are not conceived, the person in need of an organ has a slim chance of survival.
Another argument made by Catholic.org is that these babies being born for the purpose of being a savior sibling, in fact, are not saviors, since a savior acts upon something instead of passively being used. This shows that this person is being used and most likely not given a choice, to help their sibling.
These stakes are high.
From catholic.org:
But also, the savior sibling lives a life of feeling "used" or feeling like their sole purpose in life is to help their sibling. If their sibling dies, they oftentimes blame themselves and live a life of guilt and shame.
I've reached the conclusion that I cannot support this.
Although I understand a parent would go to this extreme because of their love for their child, I think that if this is is proclaimed moral, it allows a modern day form of slavery. Also, it disrespects human dignity. Everyone is entitled to their own body, so they should have the choice to donate their own blood or organs. Savior siblings denies a person the right to their own body.
As an avid watcher of Grey's Anatomy, I first heard about savior siblings when a patient on the show expressed her problems with being a savior sibling. I thought, "What on earth is that?"
Later on, a friend mentioned the book, My Sister's Keeper, which was about the topic of savior siblings. Needing a good book to read, I started reading it and decided to do this topic for my project.
The book made me cry, completely shocked me, and made me want to learn more about savior siblings. I wanted to find my opinion on the topic by knowing the facts.
It should be allowed: We must help the sick children in any way we can!
"another option"
- Newborns as involuntary donors
"advantages"
All parents say they would do anything to help their child if they are sick. Although having a savior sibling is going to an extreme, for some people, this is their last option. They find that conceiving a savior sibling is ethical because you are saving another life.
- More Babies Being Born to Be Donors of Tissue
This article says that although they created these children to help a sibling that already exists, the savior sibling is loved just as equally. Also, it is better to be conceived to donate rather than never being alive.
- Concerns About Savior Siblings Should Be Based on Facts
Another argument is that it doesn't harm anyone, whether it be the donor or the patient.
Therefore, the argument that is for savior siblings says that: they save another person's life, they are loved just as equally as any child, and that they would not even exist if they weren't conceived for the purpose of being a savior sibling.
For some cases, the sick child either isn't capable of making decisions (due to age) or they don't get the choice to decide if their parents will conceive a savior sibling. But, they are definitely grateful for another chance of life that is given to them from their sibling. Others may feel like they are a burden and cause hardship for their sibling and their family.
- The Use of Children as Sibling Donors Is Unethical
This article is saying that an organ donor gives their organ because of their own choice. If someone conceives a child in order to give another person an organ, they are not giving that child (organ donor) a choice. Instead, it would be using a child as if they are a product, which violates a person's human dignity.
It shouldn't be allowed: People shouldn't be used as body parts and we should respect human dignity.
- Newborns as involuntary donors
This article is saying that conceiving a person for the purpose of receiving an organ is a "new variety of slavery".
Here is one student speaking out against savior siblings:
How would one's experience shape how one views this issue?
Other people disagree with savior siblings and call it unethical because it is using another person or conceiving them for "spare body parts".
Any good parent would do anything to help their child. I think most parents would say that having a savior sibling in order to help their sick child is moral, especially if they love the savior sibling just as equally. Therefore, being a parent of the sick child gives a perspective that going to extremes to save a person is an ok thing to do.
Let's look at it from 3 perspectives:
The parents of the children
The sick child
The savior sibling
Opinions may change for other people due to personal experience. Say this person knew someone with a fatal disease or cancer that could benefit from a savior sibling. They may agree that savior siblings are moral since they can give life. Or in another case, a person could know a savior sibling and understand the pain and worries that they suffer. This could change their view to be against conceiving savior siblings.
The savior sibling themselves may feel a variety of emotions.
- They may be grateful for being given the gift of life and happy to share this life with their sibling
- They may feel used and only needed/loved when their sibling is in need of blood or an organ
- They may feel like their only purpose in life is to give body parts
- They may be tired of being poked and prodded
The list goes on...
