Georgia Timeline

Salzburgers

German speaking Lutherans who lived in and near Salzburg.

Came to Georgia in 1734 to escape religious persecution in Europe.

They were given land 25 miles up river of the Savannah River. They named this land Ebenezer.

The land that was given to them was too swampy to live and farm on.

Two years later they moved to better location and called it New Ebenezer.

At this location they built schools, orphanages, churches and mills.

They were somewhat successful in producing silk.

King George II gave a charter to Oglethorpe and the Trustees to start a new colony in the New World.

This land will be called Georgia (named after King George II).

Malcontents: people who were unhappy of the situation in the new colony.

Their objections:

1. Women could not inherit land.

2. Found that grapes, olives and mulberry trees did not grow well in Georgia. They resented having to work so much for very little produce.

3. They did not want to be limited to only 500 acres. They wanted large plantations like those in South Carolina. There were large rice growing plantations that made a lot of money.

4. They also wanted slavery.

James Oglethorpe travels back to England, carrying with him, Tomochichi and other Indians.

Once in South Carolina they publish a book entitled " A True and Historical Narrative of the Colony of Georgia".

This book outlines the struggles and problems in Georgia as well as a criticism of the Trustees.

Laws in Georgia

1. Could not drink rum. Would not allow the sale of rum to the Indians. They thought it would make a person sick

2. Fair trade with the Indians. They did not want the Indians to become allies with the Spanish in Florida.

WHY?

3. No Slavery in Georgia. They thought that the slaves could be convinced, by the Spanish, to "rise up" against them and kill them.

Indentured Servants were allowed in Georgia.

Usually lasted 4-7 years.
