National Governing Bodies (NGB's)

The majority of sports that we know today were developed and organised in the late 19th century. The participants needed to agree rules and regulations for their sports and so they met and formed committees called governing bodies- for example the Football Association (FA)

There are more than 256 governing bodies in the UK

The teams and clubs involved with that sport pay a subscription to the governing body. They in turn administer the sport nationally and organise competitions and the national team.
