-Dinoflagellates have two flagella, one long that moves in a whip-like motion and a shorter one that acts like a rudder.

-These are what dinoflagellates look like.

-Dinoflagellates are probably best known for their tendency to produce light when they are disturbed. This is the act of bioluminescence.

-Dinoflagellates can live in all aquatic environments: marine, brackish, and fresh water, including in snow or ice. They can also can live in sea ice.

Classification

-Dinoflagellates are eukaryotes and protista.

-Dinoflagellates are unicellular.

-Dinoflagellates are mixotrophic which means they use photosynthesis and they consume prey.

Behavior

-Dinoflagellates are harmless to humans through contact, but are harmful if a human eats seafood which has been contaminated by Dinoflagellates.

-Dinoflagellates cause red tide which causes the death of marine life.
