Familial Loyalty

Japan, like many asian cultures places an extremely high value on honoring your elders. The "Tale of Genji" shows that through its theme of familial loyalty. The story places great importance on listening to your family and not disobeying them. Modern-day Japan and Feudal Japan both culturally have a history of great respect for their family and elders.

"The Emperor acted with great kindness, and intimated his wish to desire her as his own daughter."

Although familial loyalty is the theme of this story it also has the underlying theme of individuality over wealth and status. As a student in attending an art school for this particular story I can relate to the sub-theme of this story. Art has always valued indivuality and originality so when the youngest son in this st was portrayed as being better than others for being different and individual it became relateable content.

Familial Loyalty

"Before her eyes the view extended for miles. In the silver lake below, the pale face of the moon was reflected in the calm, mirror-like waters, displaying itself in indescribable beauty."

This quote from the Tale of Genji personification is a literary device used to give human-like features to the moon.

"The Emperor showed equal affection to both of them, and he sometimes told her that he hoped she would not treat the boy with coldness or think him forward. He said that his affection for one made him feel the same way for the other..."

"The good child had dedicated herself with such touching devotion to nursing her sick mother, and after the mother's death had fulfilled the many elaborate mourning conventions so exactly, that her already delicate health suffered seriously and the lessons had to be stopped for a long time."

"Sir, what ill-fated creature is that

you hold in your arms? It will bring nothing but sorrow to its parents!"

This line foreshadows Little Lotus' kidnapping, and as a result of that the family's house burning down and losing everything they owned.

""My heart! My liver! Flesh and blood of my child!" she cried in a voice so stifled with emotion that the room became filled with the sounds of sobbing and sniffling, and Black Jade too could not keep back her tears. They all pressed around her speaking loving and comforting words."

In this story the young maiden knew her destiny was to go off and be married. Her parents did not want her to leave and she had to convince them by begging and getting advice from the divine. I can relate to this story because like the young maiden I know that my education requires that I leave home and my parents were very reluctant to accept this.

Familial Loyalty

"The sound of the wind is dull and drear across Miyagi's dewy Lea, and makes me mourn for the motherless dear that sleeps beneath the Hagi tree"

This is an allusion. The allusion is to a place called Miyagi. Miyagi is the name of a field that is famous for its small pretty shrubs that bloom in autumn and are often associated with deer.

The Tale of Genji

"The good woman was overjoyed to have a child to love and cherish at last. In spite of their abject poverty, the couple gave the little girl every care and attention. They saw to it that she wanted for nothing and let her have her own way in everything."

"I shall come even if I have to suffer a hundred deaths!"

This quote is a hyperbole. He is exaggerating the extent of trouble he would get it for seeing Lotus.

Dues ex machina

"Unfortunately for the prince, his mistrust had angered Ngoc Hoang, the Emperor of Jade, who rules Heaven and Earth. As soon as the prince's ship entered the harbor of Nha Trang, it was changed into a rock."

This is an example of divine intervention settling a conflict that could not have otherwise been settled.

"The prince did not want his beautiful wife to be away from his side for a single day, however, and refused to grant her permission to leave. Prayers and tears availed her nothing. The young woman then went to the seashore with her piece of sandalwood and hurled it into the water. Before her husband's very eyes, she immediately vanished into thin air."

Even though the young maiden was completely happy in her new marriage she was willing to leave it all to go back and see her family.

The sandalwood maiden

Dream of the Red Chamber

"Although the couple often sacrificed to the gods and constantly prayed for their favors, they had remained childless. But one evening, as he was returning home, the woodcutter came upon a small girl who had been abandoned in the forest.

This is another example of divine forces intervening on mortal problems and offering solutions.

Japan's most famous classical literary work. Regarded by some scholars as the world's first important novel. The story revolves around the handsome Prince Hikaru Genji. The first half of the novel deals the life of Genji. The second half deals with period after Genji's death. This is in regards to the tragedies of his son, his grandson and the three daughters of a ruined businessman. Genji's name means the "shining one."

An poor couple had always wanted a daughter of their own and then one day the woodcutter stumbled upon a young girl who had been abandoned in the forest. Years later this same young girl brings home a piece of sandalwood and seems obsessed with it. The family decides to ignore her strange habit out of consideration for her. One day the girl told her parents she had been commanded to marry one of the courtmember's son and must leave. Her parents forbade her to go until her pleas finally convinced them. She through the piece of sandalwood into the ocean and disappeared. A while later the same piece of sandalwood washed up on shore and was found by the emperor's son. The sandalwood turned into the girl and they were married. He would not let her return to see her family so she once again through the sandalwood into the ocean. The young girl returned to her family and remained with them until she died.

This story centers around the Chia family and their two dukes. Duke Ning-kuo and Duke Jung-kuo. Duke Ning-kuo's second Grandson devotes his time and energy to religious study, hoping to become an immortal after death and passes on his title to his son Chia Chen who is a libertine who lives a lecherous lifestyle. Duke Jung-kuo's son Chia Tai-shan marries the daughter of Marquis Shih of Chinling and has two kids. As the Chia family is a wealthy and powerful one for the most part throughout the story and personal struggles outweigh monetary ones although their fortune is lost a few times.

Familial Loyalty

This story is interesting because on the website where I found it there were a lot of misspelling and grammatical errors so whoever translated probably didn't speak english as a first language. Anyways, I guess I really can't relate to this story because my sister and I don't like each other or talk to each other or care about each other. so... sorry I guess.

Bathos

"Brother has lots of expenses since he just got married a few months ago. I think l wiIl put a sack of rice in his storehouse and not tell him. I'm sure he would never accept it if I offered it to him." So, late that night, he carried it to his brother's storeroom."

and

"Why, Brother!" they both called out at the same time. The two brothers put down their sacks and laughed long and hearty for they both understood the mystery behind their unchanging number of sacks of rice.

Both brothers had been giving each other a sack of rice every night because they thought the other needed it. this shows how much the brothers are willing to sacrifice for each others happiness and well-being.

South Korea

"The two brothers put down their sacks and laughed long and hearty for they both understood the mystery behind their unchanging number of sacks of rice. The younger brother thought his older brother could use the rice because he had a larger family."

Bathos is when a writer or poet falls into inconsequencial descriptions or imagery in order gain an emotional outcome from the reader. This is bathos because of the false dramatic buildup before the reveal.

Two Brothers

Dialogue

"Well," he said, scratching the back of his head, "I'll just take him another one tonight."

Dialogue is a device used to show conversations between characters in thisase the younger brother is talkign to himself this can also be called a soliloquey .

The story of two brothers is about the love two brothers have for one another. The two brothers care for their widowed mother and when she dies they divide up her posessions evenly. The brothers are rice farmers and have just enjoyed a bountiful harvest on their seperate farms. The eldest brother recently has been married so the youngers brother decides to give him rice without telling the older brother for fear he woulnd't except charity. The older brother has the same idea because his younger brother has a large family so the amount of rice each has stays the same. It isn't until the night of the full moon that both brothers realize what has been happening and laugh about it together.

Malin Kundang

Simile

Familial Loyalty

"Malin Kundang’s face was as cold as ice.''

A simile compares two things to one another using the words like or as. In this instance the author is using ice to describe the expression Malin Kundang is making.

one day when I become rich I too will go back to my home and give money to my family so that they can live the rest of their days in comfort. I feel loyalty to my family for raising me in the way that they have and granting me the oppertunity to go out and get rich, so I believe that it's only right to return and help them out with any money problems they may be having.

"...before kissing his mother’s hand. Before Malin stepped onto the ship, Malin’s mother hugged him tight as if she didn’t want to let him go."

Yet another very good example of a family who although they may not always stay together shows great loyalty and love towards each other.

A mother and her son are rather poor and work in a fishing village. One day the son tells his mother that he wants to leave so that he can become successful and knows he cannot do it here. After much discussion the mother reluctantly agrees that it will be best for him to leave but makes him promise to return and keep in touch. After a year of waiting for her son to return he finally does in a big ship with a lot of money and a beautiful wife. He is saddened to see his mother still living in poverty and gives her money.

"She wished to see the ship that brought Malin kundang home. Every day and night, she prayed to the God for her son’s safety. There was so much prayer that had been said due to her deep love for Malin Kundang. "

Even though her son has not returned in over a year Malin kundang's mother refuses to give up hope that her son will oneday return to her.
