Ixtoc 1 oil spill

What is the name of your oil spill?

My oil spill is called the Ixtoc 1 oil spill. Ixtoc is an exploratory oil well. That is what the name is from.

When did your oil spill occur?

My oil spill occurred in June 1979. The oil spill was all cleaned up March 1980.

How much oil was spilled in your oil spill?

Over 476,000 thousand tons of oil was spilled. Ten to thirty thousand tons of oil was lost every day.

What type of oil was spilled during your oil spill?

The type of oil that was spilled was heavy crude oil. Heavy crude is the worse type of oil. It is the hardest oil to clean up as well. Some characteristics of this oil "is little or no evaporation or dissolution. Heavy contamination of intertidal areas likely. Severe impacts to waterfowl and fur bearing mammals (coating and ingestion). Long-term contamination of sediments is possible. It weathers very slowly. The shoreline cleanup is difficult under all conditions as well."

How does oil spread once spilled?

Water is a polar and most oils are non polar so they do not bind together. Because they do not bind and the oil is less dense than water, it spreads over the surface. It spreads (or moves) because of the wind and the current (or waves) from the ocean/water.

How did environmentalists try to clean up the oil spill?

This was one of the worse oil spills in history. "Pemex managed to slow the spill a little using several methods including forcing metal spheres into the well. But it couldn't stop the leak until two relief wells were drilled." It took over nine months to clean it up. That may sound like a lot, but actually with all the technology, hard work, and cooperation from workers and volunteers the job got done in record time!

Problems that scientist encounter

Here are some problem with cleaning up my oil spill:

  • "As soon as the weather acts up the oil will mix with the water and disappear from the surface."
  • It will cost a lot of money to clean up. Those are some problems with my oil spill.

How were humans affected by your oil spill?

Here are some ways people were affected by my oil spill in a positive way and in a negative way.

Positive way: People can all come together and work together to fix this problem.

Negative way: Fisherman can not fish anymore. Most of the fish are dead near the shore.

How did your oil spill affect wildlife?

Much of the wildlife on the shore was suffocated by the oil. They also got hypothermia(ex. birds and turtles).

What lessons did scientists learn from your oil spill? (How have boats changed? Or rules/regulations? Or How have they learned to prevent spills? etc)

The lesson they learned was that scientist should have studied the after effects of the Ixtoc 1 oil spill. This would have allowed them to apply their findings to future tragedies.

What recently developed response tool would you use to help prevent or clean your oil spill?

The Ella G, now one of the Vessels of Opportunity, was made to receive oil and water from the skimmer, separate the oil and place it in storage tanks, and return the cleaned water to the Gulf. It had once been an offshore supply barge.

Facts about the Ixtoc 1 oil spill

  • The Ixtoc 1 oil spill was the third largest oil spill of all time.
  • eleven people died from the explosions of the Ixtoc 1 oil spill.
  • The oil spilled happened in the gulf of mexico.
