The Olympic torch

Introduction

Conclusion

The Olympic torch gets lit several months before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. It gets lit in Olympia and then travels briefly around Greece. Finally it is transported to the host country of the Olympic Games. At the opening ceremony a famous sports athlete gets chosen to light the cauldron. Once the cauldron is lit it stays lit until the closing ceremony, symbolising the start and end of the Olympic Games. It is an honour to be chosen to light the Olympic cauldron.

In conclusion as of the Olympics coming a long way it has improved very much. Now all countries can participate, women are allowed to compete and athletes compete in uniform instead of in the nood.

Today in my report I will be teaching you about The following things:

  • How the Ancient and Modern day Olympics Games started.
  • Who could compete in the Ancient Olympics.
  • Sports that were played in the Ancient Olympics.
  • New sports that were added to the Olympics.
  • E.T.C.

I have put in a lot of time and effort into my presentation and I hope you enjoy it. ;)

The Olympic Flag

Ancient Olympics

The Olympic flag has five interlocking rings which are different colours. The rings are blue, black, red, yellow and green. The five interlocking rings represent the five inhabited continents. Each country has at least one of the colours of the five rings and the white background. The motto of the Olympic flag is Citius, Altius, Fortius, which is Latin for "Faster, Higher, Stronger".

The main purpose of the Ancient Olympic games was to honour the Gods. They were held in Olympia in honour of the God Zeus. At first the Ancient Olympic Games only had one sport which was a single foot race. Then they added more sports like wrestling, boxing, pankration and other track and field sports. The winners received an olive wreath that they wore on top of their heads, and a certificate.

The Ancient Olympics had very strict rules. Woman were forbidden from participating, nor could they be part of the crowd. Men had to compete naked. In 394 AD, the Emperor Theodosius banned the Ancient Olympic Games because their purpose was to honour the Greek Gods. He wanted everyone to covert to Christianity. 1,500 years later the Olympics made a return and were known as the Modern Olympic Games.

Modern Day Olympics

In 1896, the first Modern day Summer Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. Instead of only Greece competing in the Olympics nearly all countries participated. New sports were added these included: cycling, swimming, fencing, hockey, basketball, shooting, gymnastics, water polo etc. Women were also allowed to compete and athletes competed in clothes this time. Every four years instead of only Greece holding the Olympic Games each country gets a turn in holding them.
