Odysseus proved to be ineffective not only in his men, eating the cattle but by this he upset the gods and therefore Zeus destroyed his ships and all his men.
Odysseus woke up to the smell of cooked cattle, and he knew that his men did not listen to his orders.
"Just then my slumber left me in a rush, my eyes opened....then savory odors of fat eddied around me"(626)
While praying, the gods put Odysseus to sleep, not listening to his prayers.
