MS-13 vs 18th Street

The rivalry between MS-13 and 18th Street supposedly started due to a night in 1990 where a fight had broken out after a party. An 18th Street member fired a shot at a MS-13 member.

Since then, MS-13 and 18th Street have started wars over territorial control, especially in Central America where each gang wants to have complete control over all Central American countries.

Demographic Make-up

Location

  • Age: 18th Street does not discriminate when it came to age. They have members from as young as 11 years old to as old as individuals in their late 40s.

  • Gender: In the U.S, 18th Street sets are mainly comprised of men. In El Salvador women are no longer allowed to join.

  • Ethnicity: Originally 18th Street was a Latino gang. All of their members were immigrants either from Mexican or Central American descent. After some time, the broke from that tradition and opened up the gang to all races. Now the gang consists of many races including African American, Asian, and Caucasian.

Recruitment

1950's Los Angeles

  • El Salvador
  • Honduras
  • Guatemala

They recruit mainly immigrants who are trying to find an identity for themselves. They target young individuals especially those who are children of immigrants because they believe that it is easier to bribe them with money and a sense of identity in exchange for their participation in the gang. If that didn't work they would use fear and intimidation. Since numbers were crucial to the success of the gang, if they offered you a position in the gang, you couldn’t refuse,

Individuals are recruited into the gang by an 18 second jump in. In El Salvador, they are either recruited by that method or they have to kill a member of MS-13.
