The past 30 years have seen an outburst of off-shore land grabbing as well as illegal development of facilities that violate waste disposal and sanitation guidelines.

Cleaning the Buriganga river has not been an easy task. Since 2008 Dhaka water authority has worked to bring water from the Yamuna river to increase water flow. Also, the government has tried to remove all solid waste from the river bed, however the pollution continues to be dumped back into the river.

Buriganga River

Goal

"A dumping ground"

Pollution

The rivers biggest problem is the severe pollution. Almost all of Dhaka's waste is dumped into the Buriganga River. According to the Department of the Environment (DoE), about 20,000 tons of tannery waste, including highly toxic materials, are released into the river every day.

Some pollutants:

The Problem...

  • Chemical waste
  • Household waste
  • Medical waste
  • Sewage
  • Dead animals
  • Plastics
  • Oil
  • With so much waste entering the river and lack of legal enforcements to stop it, the river is dying biologically and hydrologically. The river water is so dirty that fish cannot survive in it.
  • The pollution is also causing health problems for Bangladesh inhabitants: waterborne infections and skin diseases

About the River

Location

  • The Buriganga River flows past Dhaka City through Bangladesh

Economically, the Buriganga has been crucial to Dhaka. It provides access to Bangladesh's numerous waterways and is important for trade. It used to be used for a constant water supply, groundwater recharge, recreation and fisheries, as well as support for agricultural, sanitation and industrial purposes, but new developments have changed that.
