Chemotherapy Safety Precautions for Healthcare Workers

Chemo Safety

Handling & Disposal of Patient Excreta

  • Adhering to Chemo Safety Precautions protects you from exposure to toxic chemicals.

  • Exposure may occur through direct contact with a drug or through exposure to a patient's body fluids or excreta.
  • Patient excreta must be disposed of in toilet. When flushing, a disposable incontinence pad should be used to cover toilet if lid not available. Dispose of incontinence pad in yellow chemo bucket.

  • The bedpan, urinal & emesis basin should be rinsed well after each use.

  • When patient discharged, dispose of urinal, bedpan, wash basin and emesis basin in yellow chemo waste bucket. Patient is not to take these items home

Patient and Family Considerations

  • Patient will wear hospital gown while on precautions.

  • Contaminated personal clothing will be placed in a plastic bag and sent home with instructions to wash twice in hot water separately from other family members clothing.

  • Visitors must be instructed not to empty urinals, emesis basins & bedpans.

Chemo Safety Precautions

  • The pink chemo sign will be placed on the outer door of a patient's room to notify staff of chemo safety precautions.

  • Patients receiving chemo are placed on precautions beginning when the drug is given and continuing for 48 hours after administration is complete.

Personal Protective Equipment

In The Event You Have Direct Contact With Chemotherapy

  • Immediately remove contaminated gown, gloves and/or clothing.
  • Wash your skin with soap and water.
  • 2 pairs of disposable gloves & disposable gown to be worn when handling patient (urine, vomit, stool, blood) or when patient sweating profusely.

  • Gloves, disposable pads & plastic gown to be disposed of in yellow chemo waste bucket.

  • Linens and patient gowns contaminated with excreta or heavy sweat to be placed in a plastic bag & disposed of in yellow waste container.

  • For eye exposure, immediately flush the eye(s) with water at the eyewash station for 15 minutes & report to the E.R. for an eye exam.
  • Complete a safety call-out.
