The Clinical Question

  • Getting admitted to the ICU can be a very stressful situation to deal with for the patient and their family.
  • Some studies recognize that the open visitation policy is related to a reduction in symptoms of anxiety and depression for the patient and an improvement in family satisfaction
  • Web-based questionnaire was used in this research
  • It collected quantitative data to interpret the meaning
  • This research was trying to figure out why hospitals chose open vs. closed visiting policy
  • Open door policy's improved the quality of patient care and the family's involvement and knowledge of the patient's status
  • There is a battle between the physical health and the psychosocial aspect of health care.

Qualitative Article

Thank You!

Rationales of restricted visiting hour in Iranian intensive care units: a qualitative study

  • Head nurses, Nurses, Family members, and Patients were interviewed
  • 3 head nurses, 6 nurses, 2 ICU patients, 4 family visitors
  • Main question for nurses: What is your reaction to family visitors who want to visit their patients?
  • Main question for family visitors: How do you visit your hospitalized family member?
  • Interviewer used probing questions to get more information and explore into the participants experiences
  • Focus was to get information on the barriers of flexible visiting policy
  • Iranian nurses prefer restricted visiting hours to make sure they can protect their vulnerable ICU patients from any physical or mental injuries and legal abuse
  • “Evidence shows that the flexible visiting policy has many positive outcomes for both patients and their family members” (Tayebi, Borimnejad, Dehghan-Nayeri, Kohan, 2014, p. 123).
  • “Flexible visitation under careful supervision of nurses may guarantee patient safety and fulfill the patients’ and their family members’ complex needs and expectations” (Tayebi, Borimnejad, Dehghan-Nayeri, Kohan, 2014, p. 123).
  • It is important for nurses to provide family centered care!!
