ESCAPE!

  • U.S. Robots has a robot called Brain.
  • Another competing company, Consolidated, had a similar robot that is believed to have been ruined.
  • Calvin, Lanning , and Bogert feed Brain information to build a ship that can do interstellar travel.
  • Calvin told Brain "When we come to a sheet with means damage, even maybe death, don't get excited" (Asimov 180).

2029

  • Brain is able to build the ship, and sends Donovan and Powell into space.

LITTLE LOST ROBOT

  • Susan Calvin, Peter Bogert, and Gerald Black are trying to find a robot that is trying to blend in on Hyper Base.

What the Story Tells

  • Brain is more like a human than anticipated.
  • Brain becomes a practical joker to counter the dilemma of temporary death.
  • Robots are becoming more intelligent and capable of being more human. This ,however, scares people on Earth.

2032

  • The lost robot, NS-10 (Nestor 10), was told by Black (who was its commander) to "get lost" when Black got mad at him.

EVIDENCE

  • Calvin is worried that the robot will try to feel superior to humans.
  • Francis Quinn suspects that Stephen Byerley is a robot.
  • Calvin ends up tricking Nestor 10 into moving when the NS-2 robots don't.
  • Byerley is running for mayor.

What it Means

  • By modifying the First Law of Robotics, Nestor 10 was able to find a major loop hole that allowed him to do more of what he wanted.
  • Quinn says that Byerley has never been seen sleeping, eating, or drinking.
  • Even though robots are finding ways to get past a law to a certain extent, they still have very little free will.

THE EVITABLE CONFLICT

LIAR!

  • Quinn believes that Byerley's "teacher" is the real Stephen Byerley.
  • Byerley became the first World Co-ordinator when the Regions of Earth formed in 2044.
  • Alfred Lanning, Peter Bogert, Milton Ashe, and Susan Calvin are trying to figure out what went wrong with RB-34 (Herbey).
  • There are four Machines that keep Earth's economy stable.
  • Byerley ends up punching someone, but Calvin thinks this person was another robot.

2016 (half a year later)

  • There is the Eastern, Tropic, European, and Northern Region and each have a Machine of their own.
  • Herbey can read minds, and they have no idea how this happened.

CATCH THAT RABBIT

A Closer Look

  • Calvin is almost certain that Byerley was a robot which goes to show that Robots can be exactly if not almost indifferent from humans now.
  • The machines know that executives will not do what they say the executives should do.
  • People think that robots are a danger to the world, yet there are robots living among them and they have no fear at all of them.
  • Calvin says that robots would make great leaders because, "By the Laws of Robotics, he'd be incapable of harming humans, incapable of tyranny, of corruption, of stupidity, of prejudice" (Asimov 237).
  • Herbey lies to everyone, telling them what they want to hear.
  • Powell and Donovan are working with robots on an asteroid.
  • Byerley thought something was wrong with the Machines, but nothing is wrong at all.
  • The Machines protects humanity.
  • Susan tells Herbey a paradox, which causes him to overload and die.
  • They are working with the DV-5 (Dave) Robot.

What it All Means

  • Robots have created a new law that one would consider an underlined First Law or Zeroth Law.
  • A robot's top priority is to protect all of humanity.
  • Robots now play a vital role in society, and are looked at as the machines that keep the world in piece.
  • Work was not getting done, and Dave seems to be in good health.

What it All Means

  • Herbey was saying white lies. He only lied so that he would not be hurting anyone with the truth.
  • The evolution of robots up to this point has lead robots to have the ability to lie.
  • There are no rules being broken because Herbey was putting the First Law first and didn't want to hurt anyone.
  • They find out that Dave cannot multitask.

The Three Fundamental

What is the Lesson?

What the Story Tells Us

  • Robots are, once again, forming human-like traits.
  • Even though there was nothing wrong with Dave, he still had trouble.
  • Nothing is as perfect as you think it is.

Rules of Robotics

Society cannot be so prejudice against robots. Robots have hardy any free will to do what they want despite the fact that they are almost exactly like a human beings. The "Frankenstein Theorem" has brain washed people into not trusting robots when robots are actually more trustworthy than humans.

2015-2016 (half a year later)

1

REASON

A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

  • Powell and Donovan are now working on Solar Station #5 with a QT-1 (Cutie) robot.

2015

  • Cutie doesn't believe humans made him.

RUNAROUND

  • Cutie worships the power source of the station and calls it the Master.
  • All the robots obey the Master and call Cutie the prophet.
  • Gregory Powell and Michael Donovan are working on the Mercury mission.

2

A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

  • The robots ban Donovan and Powell from the control and engine rooms.
  • They have a SD-13 robot named Speedy who is supposed to collect selenium.
  • Cutie saved Earth by keeping the dials consistent.

What do You Think?

  • Speedy is stuck in equilibrium. He is caught between Law Two and Law Three.

What it All Means

  • Religion unites people and robots alike.
  • Robots are finding ways to be more "human".
  • Cutie was still following orders even though Donovan and Powell thought he was disobeying the Rules of Robotics.
  • Powell uses rule one to get Seedy back to the station

3

  • Do robots have free will?
  • Do people have a false conception of robots?
  • Do people really understand robots?
  • If robots like this existed in society today, would you like it or not?
  • Do you feel bad for any of the robots?
  • Did you feel that robots were "enslaved" or treated unfair?

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

What Does This Story Mean?

1998

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:I_Robot_-_Runaround.jpg#filehistory

  • The story shows that even though robots were "amazing" they still had flaws.
  • The Rules of Robotics have flaws in them. The rules can conflict with one another and cause an "equilibrium".
  • The situation shows readers that robots do not have the choice to do what they want and therefore get trapped within the Rules of Robotics.

ROBBIE

  • The first story Calvin tells is about a 1996 robot named Robbie.
  • Robbie is a nursemaid and took care of a girl named Gloria Weston.
  • Having a robot was "in" at the time.

What is the Significance of the story?

  • The story introduces readers to the prejudice views people have on robots.
  • To Gloria, Robbie is a best friend and someone she loves very much.
  • Adults have developed negative views on robots and don't see them as positively as children do.

2057

Introduction

  • Dr. Susan Calvin is being interviewed by a 32 year old reporter about her work with robots in the year 2,057.
  • Calvin is a robopsychologist and works for U.S. Robots and Mechanical Men.

I, Robot by Isaac Asimov

  • She tells nine stories that pertain to the development and evolution of robotics throughout time.
