A History And Timeline Of Modern Psychology In The United States

Ronald Reagan and The De-Institutionalization of The Mentally Ill

In the very beginning to understanding mental disorders people believed mental disorders were practically irreversible. Until people came along and saw what was going on in the mental institutions and even realized that some inside these institutions seemed perfectly healthy. This is when Psychologist David Rosenhan came along, and tried to fix all of these problems. They found that patients were being abused and that things needed to change.

In about 1980 Ronald Reagan declared that the mental hospitals could no longer force the mentally to receive treatment from them if they didn't want it and instead focused on community based therapy. Al though Ronald Reagans intent was good, it caused a lot of harm to the public. In fact, nearly 2.2 million people with severe mental illness did not get an treatment.

Maslow's Hierarchy

G. Stanely Hall - The Beginning

Abraham Maslow is a founder of humanistic psychology. Humanistic psychology is a psychology in which you focus on the whole body and treat everyone s a "unique individual". Maslow wrote a book called "Motivation and Personality" in which he describes a hierarchy of needs, which today is known as "Maslows Hierarchy of Needs".

One of the first ever psychologists in the U.S is G. Stanley Hall. In 1878, G. Stanley Hall earned the first Ph.D. in psychology. I believe,G. Stanley Hall is one of the most influential psychologists in American history. In John Hopkins University he opened the first ever psychology lab in the U.S, and in July ,1893 he founded the American Psychological Association as well as recruiting 42 members to join. Today there are over 1,117,000 members and psychologists have been thriving more than ever. He decided to pursue a career in child psychology. G. Stanely Hall died on April 24, 1924 at an age of 80 years old. G.Stanely Halls accomplishments will not be forgotten, and he will forever be known as the pioneer of psychology in the U.S.

Psychology in The United States of America has improved more than ever and to get there we had a lot of help from countries all over the world. With thanks to people from 400 B.C all the way to 2018 A.D we have learned so much. Although we've made mistakes we've overcome them. Through breakthroughs like Maslows Hierarchy we have seen wonders and cures. Not only thanks to Maslow but some of the presidents and early founders who always looked out for our best interest.

This showed us how humans will tend to help fill the lower bottom of the pyramid before anything else because as humans we prioritize the most important needs first. This helps psychologists understand there discoveries better.
