the mouth- site of mechanical & chemical digestion

  • site of absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream

Food turns into watery liquid called chyme

villi- tiny finger-like projections on the inside of the small intestines

digestion - process that breaks down food into smaller molecules

  • mechanical - chewing

  • chemical - uses enzymes

esophagus- tube that carries food to the stomach

-bile made by the liver breaks down fat

-enzymes made by the pancreas break down carbs & protein

enzymes- proteins that speeds up the rate of chemical reactions

stomach- muscular bag that is the site of mechanical & chemical digestion.

  • mechnaical- grinds food
  • chemical- acid + enzymes

large intestines- excess water is removed from the undigested food to form feces

rectum- stores feces

organs of the digestive system

peristalsis- smooth muscule contractions that push food down the esophagus

epiglottis - flap of tissue that prevents food from going down the trachea (windpipe)

bacteria living in the gut are helpful!

Anus

  • opening that is the exit for feces
