What is an Archetype?

To Do: Today

1. We will all be reading A Christmas Carol: Act One as a class.

2. Finish any unfinished work such as creative narratives, poetry learning guide, and tone trailer.

Examples of Archetypes...

Character: The Wizard

Common Traits: Has special powers, wise.

Examples of: Dumbledore from Harry Potter, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings

Example: The Hero

Characteristics: Noble, Makes sacrifices.

Examples: King Arthur, Luke Skywalker, Katniss Everdeen

A Christmas Carol: A Study in Archetype

Example: The Mean Girl

- A Christmas Carol is chock full of popular archetypes.

Example: The Miser

Charactersitics: Mean (obviously), hides insecurities by taking it out on others.

Examples: Quinn Fabray from Glee and Regina George from Mean Girls

Archetype

- In this story Scrooge becomes the archetypal miser.

- His characteristics are greedy, grumpy, and he is only out for his own good.

- Definition: A typical example or pattern of a certain person or thing.

We've sort of covered this before...

- Remember all the story patterns you used for your creative narratives (The Union, The Quest, Etc) they are all considered archetypes.
