GIFT GRAB QUESTION

IN ONE WORD DESCRIBE WHAT FAIRNESS MEANS TO YOU!

GIFT GRAB QUESTION

IMPLEMENTATION

What is the ethical principle that relates to FAIR, equitable, and appropriate treatment in light of what is due or owed to persons?

Assessment

Sharon and her colleagues decide they will write a letter to the Chief Medical Officer of Health in the Public Health Division as well as the Chair of Funding and Review Group. In their letter they plan to highlight the importance of these programs. They will also provide the existing data on how effective and cost- efficient these programs are. Sharon prepares research and data on the magnitude that smoking and unsafe sex has on public health. She also explains that at risk mothers have a higher incidence of raising children in poverty which is a major determinant of health. .

In this scenario as a public health nurse Sharon knows the importance of prevention and education. Programs that teach safer sex drastically reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Smoking cessation programs are also effective in helping people quit smoking. The reduction of funding for high risk mothers is also a concern as it affects the mothers and their unborn babies. The nature of these women’s lifestyles, and the complex issues they are dealing with, makes it almost impossible for them to access the healthcare system on their own. Which is why public health programs for at risk mothers is vital. Sharon also realizes that this a vulnerable population and a lot of these women have dealt with abuse, loss, addiction and are themselves a product of the child welfare system. Because women like this find it difficult to trust others, public health nurses are important because of their low-key approach and counselling techniques, which help them focus on issues that require immediate attention

The CNO Practice Standards and Ethics?

Working Through Ethical Situations in Nursing Practice

  • Should involve members of the healthcare to related to the incident
  • The nursing process provides a viable approach for examining situations involving ethical values.

What Does Fairness

Mean?

Assessment

Fairness is the quality of making judgements that are free from discrimination, bias or injustice.

SCENARIO

Sharon, a public health nurse, has just learned that the budget for safer sex and smoking cessation programs has been cut. Also, funding for a program to assist high-risk mothers and babies has also been drastically reduced. Research has shown that these programs are effective and cost-efficient.

Sharon believes that the budget cuts are wrong and it would be detrimental to society. She sees the value in these programs and believes that they are important for the community. The first thing Sharon does is ask her healthcare team how they feel about the cuts. Conversations with colleagues and the appropriate authority is an important first step in resolving the problem.

Sharon’s dilemma is that she feels the need to advocate for her patients and the community but does not know where to begin in order to solve the problem.

  • Nursing standards are expectations that contribute to public protection.
  • The inform nurses of their accountabilities and the public of what to expect from nurses.
  • An ethical framework is provided by the college to help nurses work through ethical situations.

EVALUATION

CONCLUSION

GIFT GRAB QUESTION

FAIR, equitable and appropriate distribution in society is known as what?

The team meets to assess the reasons why budget cuts are made for important programs like these. They determine that money is a big factor, however it is important for those funding these programs to realize how effective they are in disease prevention. Sharon and her colleagues begin by encouraging the public health sector to continuously inform the government and the public of the success these programs have. They also follow up to make sure that the data is being collected and that the public has access to this information. When reflecting on the situation Sharon realizes that if she had chosen option one, many people would have missed out on vital health information and intervention. Although it would have been easier for Sharon to pick option one the issues of sexual health, smoking and at risk mothers to expand even more.

PLANNING

Sharon decides to choose the second option and advocate for the public. She decides to talk to her colleagues and they think of ways to approach the situation. They decide that they must begin by reaching out to the policy makers and individuals responsible for funding these programs. They also decide that it is important to involve the public through media coverage and asking them to sign a petition. Making a website and sharing their views and concerns online might bring attention to the cause. If Sharon is able to advocate to get the funding back for these programs and progress is made it would be beneficial to the community. Communication about the changes to funding and budget cuts is important in order to get understanding and allow those who are most affected to convey their concerns.
