Dante sees two lights at the top of the tower and sees a beacon far off flicker. Virgil says that the lights are signaling their arrival, and points out that a boat is arriving for them. The boat is piloted by Phlegyas and Virgil tells him he must ferry Dante and him across the Styx. During the ride they come upon a spirit named Filippo Argenti, one of Dante's enemies. The spirit responds that he's the one who weeps and Dante curses him out. Which angers the spirit and tries to lay hands on the boat but Virgil pushes him back into the mire. Dante wishes for him to be punished and Virgil tells Dante he will get his wish. Shortly, other spirits show up and tear the spirit to pieces.
