Othello Timeline

Act V

Act III

Act I

  • Desdemona talks with and is willing to help Cassio
  • Later on, Desdemona and Othello get into a fight and Othello wants to be left alone
  • Iago is alone with Othello and speaks of a possible affair between Cassio and Desdemona
  • Othello promises to punish his wife and Cassio
  • To be sure of the affair, Othello asks for the handkerchief he gave to Desdemona
  • Desdemona cannot find it because Emilia grabbed the handkerchief
  • Iago also tells Othello that when Cassio sleeps, he sometimes mentions Desdemona in his sleep
  • Othello vorws to get revenge now with the evidenc
  • Iago and Rodrigo share their hatred of Othello
  • Iago and Rodrigo wake up Barbantio and tell him that Othello is doing things with Desdemona
  • Othello and Barbantio have a quarrel and have to meet in the senate with the duke
  • Here, Desdemona admits her love to Othello and to Barantio's dismay, he hands his daughter over to Othello
  • Iago prevents Rodrigo from committing suicide and takes his money
  • While Cassio is walking, Rodrigo comes out and tries to hurt Cassio
  • He misses and is instead stabbed by Cassio
  • Iago comes from behind and stabs Cassio in the foot
  • Rodrigo and Cassio cry out for help and Othello hears this
  • Othello is satisfied and believes Cassio to be dead. He then feels it is ready to move along with his plan
  • Othello puts out all the lights and asks Desdemona if she has prayed
  • After interrogating her, Othello smothers Desdemona
  • Emilia, Iago, and all the others come
  • Emila admits to stealing the handkerchief and is stabbed by Iago
  • Othello, out of anger, stabs Iago but does not kill him. He also apologizes to Cassio and loses his command
  • Iago tries to escape but is caught
  • Rodrigo's letters are found indicating Iago's whole plan
  • Othello kills himself and Cassio is left in charge.

Act IV

Act II

  • The act opens up with the enemy Turkish ships not surviving the storm
  • Othello is joyfully greeted by his wife and they head off for the honeymoon
  • Cassio gets drunk and gets into a fight, first with Rodrigo, and then with Montano
  • Othello comes in, listens to only Iago's side of the story, and removes Cassio from command
  • Cassio laments the loss of his status and Iago tells him to ask Desdemona to ask her Othello to give back his job
  • Iago torments Othello with graphic images of Desdemona's cheating and lets him know the handkerchief is solid proof
  • Othello has an epileptic fit and while he has one, Iago sets up a conversation between Cassio and himself
  • Othello is hidden while Cassio talks about what seems like Desdemona but is actually Bianca.
  • Bianca later comes yelling in and throws the handkerchief, making Othello even more upset
  • Iago convinces Othello to kill Desdemona
  • Othello returns back to venice and slaps his wife in front of everyone
  • Othello asks Emilia to confess Desdemona is having an affair but Emilia denies it
  • Othello calls Desdemona a whore and accusses her of adultery
  • At the end of the act, Emilia and Desdemona talk about the price for committing adultery and Desdemona says she will not do it, not even for the world
