Low SES Students in Education

What are low SES Students?

Families with low socioeconomic status often lack

the financial, social, and educational supports

that characterize families with high socioeconomic status.

These families also may have inadequate or limited

access to community resources that promote and

support children's development and school readiness.

Kansas has always had a deep history with educational inequlaity with the civil rights decision of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka.

This is called "opportunity gap"

Opportunity gap means students do not have the necessary resources, the curriculum opportunities, and the quality teachers that help students become great learners.

Accourding to data, high poverty schools still tend to have fewer student enrolled in AP courses.

Although Kansas has tried to improve it still has some of the largest opportunity gaps in the nation

What Schools and teachers

can do to help low SES Kids

Giving that children more one on one time with the teacher, while more advanced students work indipendently.

Cooperative Eniviorments are more helpful rather than competitive ones

to be involved both in home and ability.

Teachers need to be aware of a

childs hierarchy of needs.

If a child is more worried about food, shelter, and sleep they will not have a want or need to learn.
