During the Hellenistic Age many new ideas were presented about mathematics and science, due to the increased amount of influence from cultures such as Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Persia.

Many people had different ideas about math and science during the time and they worked hard to improve upon recent studies. In fact, some of their work is still being used today in many environments, such as schools. The work that many of them did has made them famous throughout history.

Thank You!

All of these people are famous for their work today and helped contribute to our society.

Now let's talk more about what each one of these people did to contribute to the Hellenistic Society...

Hellenistic Math and Science

Archimedes:

Archimedes was and ancient greek inventor, engineer, and geometer. He is known as the father of integral calculus. He was the son of Phidias and was born Syracuse, Sicily ( a colony of Greece) in 287 B.C. Some of his inventions and discoveries include:

The Archimedes Screw-used to raise water levels

The Area of a Circle-pi multiplied by the square of the radius

A Compound Pulley System-used to lift objects using leverage

The Relationship between a sphere and a cylinder-discovery that a sphere's surface area and volume equal two-thirds those of its circumscribing cylinder

The value of pi-approximately 3.14

Catapult-used to hurl objects at enemies

The Archimedes Claw-a crane-like invention

The Archimedes Principle-principle of buoyancy: a submerged object is acted on by an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces

Hippocrates

Hippocrates was born in 460 b.c. on the greek island of Cos. He is known as the "Father of Western Medicine." He is associated with a collection of medical documents entitled the Corpus Hippocraticum. This was a book of compiled of many different branches of ancient medicine. He died in 337 b.c.

Euclid:

Euclid was known for his book that he wrote, called "Elements." This book contained 465 geometry propositions and proofs. His work is the basis for geometry today. He also taught in the city of Alexandria during the Hellenistic age.

Pythagoras

Pythagoras was born in 580b.c. in Samos. He contributed to Hellenistic mathematics in many ways. One of the greatest innovations that he contributed to the world was the Pythagorean Theorem, as shown below. This theorem is used to find the sides of a right triangle. He was also a philosopher and sought to find the cosmological nature of the universe.

Some of these famous scientists and mathematicians include...

Euclid

Archimedes

Hippocrates

Pythagoras
