From 1848 to the 1930’s Feminist activity was occurring in different parts of the world. In Canada, England the Netherlands and the U.S. The First Wave focused on legal issues such as the right to vote and the right to own property. The first meeting in the US was held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848.

4th Wave began around 2008 and it is where we are now
•Feminism goes on-line –works through Social Media via Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, etc to call out companies that market in biased ways toward women and to form international alliances more easily.
•Empowerment not victim hood. No more blaming men as a group.
•4th Wave Feminists are sometimes uncomfortable with the word “feminist” due to an outdated leaning towards a “woman only” binary.
•There is a place for all of us and a sense we are all in this together. Much more inclusive of transgendered people.
Third Wave Feminism occurred during the 1990’s until the early 2000’s, one highlight was bringing women of different backgrounds together and including men. This is when Feminism really goes global and third wave feminism foregrounds the importance of all women, including lesbian and bisexual women.
•Women’s Studies Programs become common at U.S. colleges and universities
•Focus on women of color
•Focus on “queer” culture
•Focus on breaking down prescribed gender roles and stereotypes
•Women can define for themselves what feminist means; update the past.
•Lipstick, dresses, and make-up can be signs of an enlightened feminist, too.
Second Wave Feminism began in the early 1960’s and lasted through the late 1980’s. This is Where the documentary film W.A.R. begins. This is also the most exclusionary wave. Started breaking away from men and women who did not fit a stereotype where not considered a feminist.
•President Kennedy created the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women chaired by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The report found discrimination towards women in every aspect of American life. 1961.
•Affirmative Action for Women passed in 1967 Executive Order making equal pay for women and equal access to jobs a legal right.
•In 1973, the term Sexual Harassment was used for the first time in a report to the president of M.I.T. * In 1976, Barbara CharlineJordan was elected to Congress. She was first African American woman to come from the deep south and the first woman ever elected in Texas.In 1978, the Equal Rights Amendment was not passed because it was not ratified by three states. As of 2016, it has still not been ratified.
