Edgar Allan Poe

Born in Boston to David and Elizabeth Poe.

Henry and Rosalie were Edgar's brother and sister

Edgar's mother died in December of 1811.

Edgar was only two years old

His foster Parents were Mr.

and Mrs. John Allan.

John was a successful merchant so Edgar grew up

with good surroundings and attended a good school.

At age six he began to fear death.

The dead.

And Cemeteries.

He was sent to the University of Virginia.

Poe resorted to gambling to pay for part of his

college because he felt that his foster father wasn't

paying him enough.

The death of his family members influenced his writing the most.

His Mother, and two siblings were the focus of the Raven.

He became famous for his short stories and poems, because they

captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world.

Edgar's life has become a sort of mystery.

Facts and fiction have been mixed sense his death.

Beginning his Career

Published his first book in 1827. About this same time he

had enlisted in the army.

Enrolled in West Point in 1830

Did excelled in his studies a West Point

But was kicked out for the poor handling

of his duties.

Once he left the academy he focused completely on his writing.

Through the beginning part of his writing career he traveled quite a bit.

Living in: New York City,

Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Richmond.

During this time of travel he stayed with his aunt for a while were he met his future wife Virginia.

Yes this was his 13 year old cousin...

The couple got married in 1836

During this time he was having troubles with the magazine he was writing for, and this is when his drinking problem was said to have started.

During this time he started a new genre of detective fiction. One of the stories he wrote during his time was "The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Another was "The Gold Bug" which won him a literary prize in 1843.

One of his famous pieces the "Raven" was written at this time.

His common themes from many of his pieces were

death and loss.

Poe had accused Longfellow another famous writer at the time had widely plagiarized many of his works.

The beginning of the end

When his wife died in 1847 Poe was overcome with grief.

At this point Poe was not in the best health.

Poe was also struggling financially

He left Richmond and was heading for Philadelphia when he died.

Died at Washington College Hospital where his last words were, "Lord Help my poor soul".
