What is a Psycho-Educational Group?

Comparing and Contrasting

Group Therapy helps to address a variety of issues and reach a range of therapeutic goals

  • Psycho-Educational groups are defined as groups where the primary focus is education about a psychological concept or topic.

Some topics addressed are:

substance abuse, and other addictions

domestic violence

depression and anxiety

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Child Abuse

Issues Surrounding Eating and Body Image.

Psycho-Educational groups are a hybrid of a counseling group and traditional academic group with many characteristics of each. (Psycho-Educational groups process and practice)

They may consist of one session or many sessions

Psycho-educational groups may be taught by mental health experts, peer counselors who share a similar diagnosis, or members of the community. (psychoedgroupdef.htm)

They are easier to plan, and lead.

psycho-educational groups are used with children, adolescence and adults in all kinds of settings such as hospitals, buisnesses, universities, governmental institutions and social service industries, and military.

This is because there is less ambiguity and uncertainty about the material to be covered, expected learning outcomes, sequencing of material, and members information needs.

Focus On Providing Information about specific topics related to the group

this is in order to give additional resources or information to the group.

Are more structured

Members are provided with specific topics or modules to discuss and explore.

(group-therapy.html)

The intention is to enhance their knowledge about the topic which is often identified in the name of the group.

Deep Process Groups

Discussion flows according to what members would like to talk about, the group leaders do not, for the most part, assign topics for the group to discuss.

The activities are designed to encourage communication, insight, trust and personal growth.

Focus on the experience of being in a group as a healing opportunity for the process of expressing thoughts, feelings, and experiences to discover change

New members are often amazed at how much their contributions help other members.

The people who attend These groups will be depend upon whether it is a closed or open group

if members can pop in and out and new members can join it is an "open group"

Once a group becomes established they tend to become closed to new members for a period of time.

Deep Process Groups have more ambiguity, emphasize emotions, and learning outcomes are individualistic rather than for the group as a whole.
