Tsunamis

What is a tsunami ?

Hello, 8A. today we are going to explain about tsunamis, what causes them, what are the risks, how does it happen.

Northern Chile-13 August 1868

A tsunami is also known as a seismic sea wave, or in other words 'tidal wave'. tsunami is a series of waves in a body of water caused by the displacement of a large volume of water.

Types of tsunamis

There are three types of tsunamis:

1. Local Tsunamis

2. Regional Tsunamis

3. Distant tsunamis

When did the tsunami happen?: The Northern chile tsunami occurred on 1868, 13 of August at 16:45 (local time).

Where did the tsunami happen?: The tsunami occurred at the center of 'port of Africa', being felt at 1400 km to the northwest, (Samanco, Peru) and at the equal distance to the south ( Valdivia chile)

What happened?: In august 1868, an earthquake of about 0.9 magnitude of shore from Peru Chile boarder made a giant tsunami.

The causes of tsunamis ?

Who died in the chile tsunami?: The earthquake killed thousands of people along the south american coast.

Why did it happen?:Two separate earthquakes had been clashing and later caused a tsunami.

How long for the after shocks?: There were instrumental recordings at that time but it was reported that several strong aftershocks occurred in the following hours, days, weeks, and even months.

Tsunami's are waves caused by sudden movement of the ocean due to earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, large volcanic eruptions, meteorite impact on the ocean. This earthquake pushes a large volume of water to the surface, creating waves. These waves are the tsunami.

Are there any early warning systems for tsunamis?

What areas are at risks for a tsunami?

In the deep ocean these waves are small.

As they approach the coast these waves get bigger and more dangerous.

How often do tsunami's occur ?

The 'Tsunami Warning System' (TWS) is used to detect tsunamis in advance and issue warnings to prevent the loss of life and damage.

On the average, two tsunami's can occur per year, throughout the world. Approximately every 15 years a destructive ocean-wide tsunami occurs

70-80 of tsunamis occur in the pacific ocean due to the active subduction zones and their associated volcanic arcs, also due to it's size.

Especially vulnerable are the five pacific states- Hawaii, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California- and the U.S. Caribbean islands.
