Scottish Tartans

Each clan in Scotland had its own special colors and patterns used in making plaid tartans.

Pomo Basket Weavers

Japanese Weaving

The Pomo tribes lived in the northern bay area counties of Mendocino, Sonoma, and Lake County. They created beautiful baskets from reeds that had special designs. Their baskets were even water-tight.

Pomo baskets have broken designs so that spirits could pass freely into and out of the basket.

Oriental Rug Weaving

Japanese weavers use different weaving methods to create very intricate and beautiful designs. Nishijin Ori is the most lavish form of weaving using silk.

Can you spot a break in the pattern above?

Oriental rugs have been created by people of China, Tibet, Turkey, Iran, the Caucasus, India and Pakistan for thousands of years. These rugs are unique because they involve intricate knots within the weaving.

Weavers in History

People all over the world and throughout time have used weaving to create clothing, rugs, baskets, decorations, even houses!

Guatemalan Huipils

Let's Make Our Own Weaving!

Choose colors and patterns that are meaningful to YOU!

Kente Cloth

What will your weaving say about you?

Traditionally, each village had its own special design that was used in each huipil. That way, you would know which village created the huipil.

Traditionally, Kente were worn only by royalty in Ghana for special occasions. Each color has a special meaning and a completed kente can tell a lot about the person it is made for.

What is Weaving?

You can use lots of different materials to weave!

Weaving is a process of overlapping threads on a loom to create textiles and baskets. The weft thread goes over and under, over and under the warp thread. It is one of the oldest traditions in the world.

Peruvian Weaving

Let's Get Started!

Peruvian weavers use wool from alpacas and llamas to make thread. Yarn is dyed using plants, minerals, and insects.

Woven textiles are a way of sharing thoughts and recording history- each design means something special.
