Title Sequence Analysis

The Conjuring

The titles are very subtle until the final words “The Conjuring” appear on the screen where it’s very obvious that they’re there because there’s no other focal point of the picture on the screen at that time, despite having a lot going on in the background.

It uses one, fairly plain font that doesn’t really stand out but at the same time draws all the attention to it because it’s been placed into black and white pictures and newspaper articles of the various families and events that the film was based around.

The way the names are used to cover the faces, I feel, adds to the fact that it's supposed to remain mysterious and creepy in order to intrigue the viewers and somewhat make them feel unnerved.

On most parts of the title sequence opening, the titles introducing the characters and the actors blend in really well. So if it’s showing a picture, it looks like the writing is part of the picture, or when the newspaper is showing it looks like they’re part of the article which works really well as the entire film bases itself on being subtle until the end where everything is made very apparent.

I think the black and white colours influence the way people are going to look at the film, considering it is a horror film the use of only black and white for the opening credits was a good choice. If they had used bright colours like orange or blue then people would’ve got the wrong idea of the film and probably wouldn’t have been as scared by the films events as there would be nothing to give them the aspect of fear.
