General James "Mad Dog" Mattis

USMC Ret.

- "...there is nothing wastes so rapidly as liberality, for even whilst you exercise it you lose the power to do so, and so become either poor or despised, or else, in avoiding poverty, rapacious and hated.

"...nevertheless his deceits always succeeded according to his wishes, because he well understood this side of mankind." (Machiavelli Chapter 18)

-"Compassion, like generosity, is usually admired. But a prince must be careful that he does not show compassion unwisely. " -Machiavelli, Chapter 17

- " Nevertheless a prince ought to inspire fear in such a way that, if he does not win love, he avoids hatred..." (Machiavelli Chapter 17)

President Obama was Elected in 2008 and then again in 2012. Upon his election, he passed a healthcare law that required all to have his healthcare plan called "Obama care" if they were not already insured otherwise face a fine. he said it would be best for all even though he knew it would not be good for all. What Obama did was deceitful because he did not tell the American People the whole story. One example of this is the fact that he did not tell the American People that their premiums would go up. By Obama doing this he best exemplifies Machiavelli's quote from Chapter 18

*Bill Gates is the Technology Adviser of Microsoft, the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the CEO of Cascade Investment, and the chairman of Corbis. He debunks Machiavelli's concept that generosity will lead to being hated.

*Bill Gates has donated billions of dollar to charitable organizations

that focus on improving the health and lives of people around the globe, up to half of his estate at times. Despite this he remains one of the richest men in the world.

-He was elected president of the Baptist World Alliance during the 20th Baptist World Congress held in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 2010.

-Prior to being elected executive director of the BGAV and the VBMB in 2001, Upton and his wife, Deborah, served as missionaries in Taiwan through the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.

- General Mattis was revered in the Marine Corps. as a tough, aggressive individual that represents Machiavelli's idea that leaders should be tough, and present a callous demeanor to create fear. Enemies of the world over who have been engaged with General Mattis have come to fear his demeanor towards combat and as such respected him very much.

- Some of his comments created lot's of controversy in the media and within the high ranks of Washington.

John Upton's Compassion

General Mattis's Reputation

Bill Gates' Generosity

From the above example we can see that General Mattis was not afraid to speak his mind and this created lots of controversy. He consistently displayed that warrior ethos that made him so feared and revered at the same time. That is why I believe him to represent Machiavelli's idea of creating fear around the leader in question for by doing so he gains respect, and presents a demeanor of a leader not to be challenged whether in combat or in peace time. General Mattis is probably one of the few leaders to still display such traits as we can see from the above video clip doing so generates lots of controversy and can end a career very quickly as this behavior can be labeled as politically incorrect.

This is just a prime example of what a compassionate man John Upton really is. Machiavelli spent much time believing that too much compassion can ruin a prince and his reputation. In today's society this is simply not the case. He has spent much of his time sharing God's love with the people around this world, and I truly believe compassion like this is not something that can ruin someone or their reputation.

Bill Gates discusses his pledge to donate over half of his money to charitable organizations in order to improve lives around the world. While he has a reputation for being a domineering boss of Microsoft, his gracious donations have not resulted in him becoming either "poor and despised" nor has he had to avoid poverty as he remains one of the richest men in the world. He proves that this idea of Machiavelli's is outdated.
