The tapestry method however, fails to address the fact that the world, and all it's inhabitants are changing and growing. Cultures intermingle through marriage, immigration, migration, or begin to die out all together. Once a tapestry is made, there can be no addition or removal of thread without the whole thing unraveling.
The Tapestry Metaphor- A tapestry is a decorative cloth made up of many strands of thread. Each thread represents a person, and groups of similar threads are a symbolic representation of a culture within the United States. The types of threads differ in many ways. The threads can be thick, thin, coarse, or smooth. The various threads are woven together in order to achieve a beautiful image.
The tapestry metaphor creates a beautiful imagery that conveys how the individuality of every person and culture can come together in a harmonious and unexpected way. A spool of only one type of thread could not be woven into any type of image. Variation and intermingling are needed to create something beautiful.
I believe that the imagery of a patchwork quilt better represents the cultural diversity of the United States.
A patchwork quilt is blanket in which the top layer consists of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. The fabric sewn on can be from different scraps and patches of material. The quilt can always receive additional material, or have some patches removed without it affecting the whole blanket.
The United States is the top layer of fabric, and it's inhabitants and their cultures are represented by the colorful and unique patches of fabric that come to be engrained within each other.
