Depending on the advancement of the movement, your head during the demi plie your head should follow the movement of the hand and arm.

Movements of the head:

  • right/ left lateral rotation
  • right/ left lateral tilt

Your arm movement also depends on the advancement of the movement.

Position of the arm:

  • lateral abduction
  • slight flexion in the elbow and wrist
  • slight supination in the wrist

Movement of the arm:

  • pronation of the wrist
  • extension of the elbow
  • adduction of the arm
  • slight flextion of the elbow/ wrist
  • abduction in the sagital plane
  • lateral rotation in the transverse plane to the starting position

The Pelvis

Your pelvis should stay in anatomical position until you pass your demi plie.

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint which means it has the ability to circumvent when the muscles are flexible enough.

Hip Joint Position:

  • femur externally rotated

Movements of the hip:

  • flexion in the hip in the frontal plane
  • as you deepen the plie the flexion increases
  • extension of the joint in the frontal plane

The knee is classified as a hinge joint although it has some gliding action as well.

Movement of the knee:

  • flexion
  • extension

The Dance Journal:

  • popping sound/ feeling in your hip or knee is very dangerous.
  • stretching/ physical therapy is important for healthy plies.

Popping Sounds in hips or knee:

  • occurs with extreme flexion of hip or knee
  • occurs due to motion of tensor fascia latae and the iliotibial band
  • this connects from the greater trochanter of the femur and the tibial tuberosity of the fibula.
  • Tensor fascia latae moves over greater trochanter and lateral condyle

The ankle is a complex joint because it is made up of many condular joints.

Movements of the ankle:

  • external rotation
  • dorsal flexion
  • plantar flexion
