Reaching Out.

Cho began his rampage by killing 2 students in the dorm after 7a.m.

Later, went into a classroom building and started shooting students and faculty members.

April 16, 2007

Killing 32 people and injuring numerous others around 9:45a.m.

Seung-Hui Cho

Cho went to the post office to mail a package to NBC News in New York. It was received two days after the murders, it contained video clips, photographs of Cho posing with his weapons and a rambling document.

Early Life

The Labeling Theory

He was picked out for his accent and being shy. People would push him down and laugh at him. And that's why he became so angry.

Born in South Korea on January 18, 1984. Cho and his family lived in a basement apartment in South Korea. Cho was 8 years old when he and his family came to the country. They then settled in Centreville, Virgina, where his family ran a dry cleaning buisness.

Preplanned

From the evidence found in Cho's dorm room it was clear he had been planning the assult on his fellow students and faculty for quite some time.

February 2, 2007, Cho began purchasing his first handgun, a .22 Caliber Walter P22 semiautomatic pistol.

EVIDENCE

March 13, 2007, Cho bought his second handgun, a 9mm Glock 19 semiautomatic pistol.

During the investigation, the police found a note in Cho's room. He criticized "rich kids", "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans". He continued to say "you caused me to do this".

Early reports also show that Cho was obsessed with fellow student, Emily Hilscher and became enraged after his romantic overtures were rejected

Shy Child Bullied

Bullied by other students, including the wealthy members of the church. Cho stood out as a near-silent loner, who wrote gruesome poems, stories, and plays.

Cho photographed females legs and knees in his classes. He was accused twice of stalking female students in 2005, but neither of the victims filed charges.

In high school, rumors were told that Cho had a 'hitlist'. It was a list of who Cho wanted to kill.

After graduating in 2003, he went to study at Virgina Tech University. He lived in a dorm complex with a roommate. Cho roommate said that he barely talked and kept to himself. He also commented that he didn't know anything about him, not even his major.

Cho could have had a weak bond with his parents which could have led to the reason why he did what he did. He also had a speech problem, and then that caused kids to make fun of him.

Cho's parents mentioned that their solution for help Cho is to take him to church. But forcing religion upon someone could cause them to act violently

Interactional Theory

According to the theory delinquents will try to associate themselves with other delinquents. That it is reinforced over time because they hang out with people who encourage that kind of behavior and through that reinforcement the crime escalates. His writing could be that reinforcer and something could have set him off to escalate what he was doing and cause the shootings.

Developmental Pathways Theory

Manifestations of disruptive behaviors are age dependent; especially in childhood and adolescence.

Behavior as a young child: Cho's great aunt described Cho as "cold" and a cause of family concern from as young as 8 years old. Cho was shy and just wouldn't talk at all. In 2006, Chos mother told the elderly aunt that Cho might have autism.

Muddle School & High School: Students picked on Cho for his shyness and unusual speech patterns. He would look down and refused to speak when called upon in class.
