Equator & Prime Meridian
- Equator: an imaginary line (left to right) across the map that cartographers draw on world maps.
- Prime Meridian: an imaginary line (south to north) through the center of the world map.
- Both top and bottom of the map, the Prime Meridian is marked as 0°
Hemispheres
The Equator divides the earth into 2 equal parts, or hemispheres
- Northern Hemisphere: the part above (north) of the Equator
- Southern Hemisphere: the part below (south) of the Equator
The Prime Meridian also divides the earth into 2 equal parts.
- Western Hemisphere: the part to the left (west) of the Prime Meridian
- Eastern Hemisphere: the part to the right (east) of the Prime Meridian
Add the 4 hemispheres to your outline map.
Maps help us understand the world.
- Mapmakers are called cartographers.
- Cartographers help make map reading easier by drawing location lines on maps.
- The lines do not exist in the real world, but they help make locating places easier and more accurate.
