Overview
Who was in charge and why?
France controlled an area known as Indochina which consisted of all three Vietnamese territories, Cambodia and Laos
They had control over Indochina from 1887-1954
The reason for French Colonization was to make profit, establashing trade routes in Southern Asia particularly with China. It was also to establish a colony to counter the British's new colony, India where Frances presence had been forced out by the British. France also was there to supposedly convert the population, turning them into good christians.
Effects of Imperialism Caused by France
Good
- Infastructure
The French built developed Harbours,
roads, sewage systems, schools, railways
and waterworks to control flooding to increase
agricultural output.
- Jobs, cash flow into the country
There was a definite increase of trade
into Vietnam, which created jobs
for many locals.
Bad
- Poor Treatment of locals
Oppression of locals, near slaverly, created a new class of Vietnamese landlords and Vietnamese surfs. Recruitment of forced labour, such as mining or building, no workers rights.
- No economic relief for population
While cash flow into Vietnam did drastically increase, and jobs were created, the ordinary people did not benefit, only the French colonizers living in Vietnam and the small upper-class of Vietnamese landowners.
How was it achieved?

With the beggining of WWII Frances presence in Vietnam had begin to diminish, only to be replaced by the Japenese. Ho Chi Minh was not satisfied to be rid of one colonial power only to replaced with another.
France wasn't too happy with the new republic of Vietnam,
so soon after French troops came back into Vietnam and war soon followed, the First Indochina War.
Although using guerilla tactics they found it hard to fight the French, because of their superiour weapons and technology.
However with the sucess of Mao Tse-tung communist party in China supplies from China began coming in.
Politically this simplified Ho Chi Minh's position, as he did not have to be explicitly communist in order to gain support of French invasion, he also crushed other political parties, declaring them traitorous to the cause.
Economic progress in Vietnam benefitied only the French, it did not give back to the country as a whole, and the few wealthy vietnamese landlords.
Bad treatment of locals, great divide between upper class and lower class. Near slaverly of country folk.

Operating from the Jungles of North Vietnam, he orginazed the Viet Minh, a gureilla independence group, supported by the United States of America, China and supplied by the USSR.
They won many victories against the Japenese and in 1945 declared the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

BAD
The divide between rich and poor would of been less, Vietnam could of stayed as one of the top rice importing countries for many stable years.
If Vietnam had never been colonized then the seperation of Vietnam would of never occured, nor would the idea of communism in Vietnam spread or been the founding idea of a free Vietnam.
Agent Orange would of never been used, saving the forest and preventing birth defects with both american soilders and vietnamese soilders/ civilians, and preventing the hold up in rice production.
Without the spread of communism in Vietnam, the Vietnamese war would of never happened, saving lifes, money and stopping the hippie movement.
