de Lome Letter

The letter was written by Senor Don Enrique Dupuy de Lome, the Spanish Ambassador to the United States, to Don Jose Canelejas, the Foreign Minister of Spain. In the letter, de Lome voices his opinion of the Spanish involvment in Cuba. Cuban revolutionaries got a hold of the letter and released it to the Hearst press. De Lome’s remarks about McKinley, also mentioned in the letter, helped fuel this country’s aggressive, warlike foreign policy.

The United States started work on the Panama Canal on May 4th, 1904. It links the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The French were the ones that originally began work on the canal, but they were unsuccessful so the US took over. It made travel a lot easier.
