yazoo act (1795)

The next approach was the Yazoo Act (1795) named after the river in Mississippi. The act sold the land that would soon become Alabama and Mississippi to four companies for $500,000

George Mathews

After the act sold, the Georgia governor ,George Mathews signed the Yazoo Act into a law. It was then discovered that land companies were bribing members of the General Assembly to sell land. Georgians suddenly an to protest.

James Jackson

When James Jackson,a senator of Georgia, heard that these protests were going on he immediately resigned his seat and went back to the state. When he got back to the state he and his allies then took over the General Assembly and nullified the Yazoo Act.

"Americans who sided with the British"

Georgia claimed land that stretched all the way down to the Mississippi River. Many war veterans believed that all citizens had a right to land ownership. Georgia's government agreed due to the ideas on the Declaration of Independence. Since most of the leaders and people were in agreement, the next step was what the best way was to allocate land to the people of the state.

A famous image in Georgia history is the "Burning of the Yazoo Act". the image shows James Jackson and others watching as they burn the Yazoo document. many believe that they used a magnifying glass to bring "fire from heaven" so they could destroy the document.

Georgia ceded to the U.S. government for 1.25 million dollars. Georgia stated they wanted the U.S. to relinquish the Indian land claims and wanted the removal of Creek Indians in Georgia. This controversy with the Yazoo Act became known as the Yazoo Land Fraud.
