Although they are in competition with each other, both companys are good. Starbucks might offer benefits, but Dunkin could offer more. Dunkin just hands you the coffee when it's ready, but Starbucks workers ask you your name to put on the cup. I have been a customer at both places and they have both served me well. When it comes to the environment, I definitely think that Dunkin' has the upper hand because they have actually put their words to action instead of just trying like Starbucks is doing. Overall, I think Dunkin' is more socially responsible than Starbucks.
“From our employees and franchises to the farmers who grow our coffee, we believe in treating everyone with respect and fairness so they are empowered to reach their goals.”
Dunkin' helps their employees with many aspects of their job. To help the farmers who grow the coffee, Dunkin' offers 100% Fair Trade Certified espresso beverages. They also offer grants to crew, franchises and employees affected by federally declared disasters.
The customer benefits from social responsibility. On the menus of Dunkin' restaurants, they include nutrition and food safety facts. They also have altered favorite items like the Coolatta and doughnuts to appeal to foreign customers. In Korea, there is kimchee-filled doughnuts and green tea ice cream. In Peru, they have the Chicha Coolatta, which is sweetened blue corn.
“We are passionate about offering our guests delicious products they will enjoy, giving them plenty of menu options, and providing accurate nutrition information so they can make the best choices for themselves.” Their main objective to help customers is to make most of their products healthy. They want the customer to stay informed with any new changes that could impact the product.
Charities and schools benefit from social responsibility. With Dunkin', the workers raise money for hunger relief, children's health, disaster relief, and charities like Toys for Tots and the Australian Breast Cancer Program.
The employees benefit from social responsibility. Through Dunkin' Donuts, the employees are learning how to develop professionally. Dunkin' also introduced flexible work time and they are increasing web casts to communicate more directly to employees around the globe.
“We recognize that everything we do has an impact on the environment. From the materials we use, to the way we construct and operate our stores, we are committed to adopting better, more sustainable approaches whenever possible.” In 2008, Dunkin' Donuts got Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified for a green building. Recently, it achieved LEED Silver Certification.
The planet benefits from social responsibility. Dunkin' has been working with the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps program to find a way to reduce energy use and utility costs. They have also added Dunkins' first ever electric car charging station in St. Petersburg, Florida
“We are dedicated to serving the basic needs of our local communities – from providing food for the hungry and support for children’s health and wellness, to ensuring our neighborhoods are safe and secure.” To help the community, Dunkin' Brands created the Dunkin' Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation. So far they have raised over $2 million for organizations like Feeding America, Homes for Our Troops, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Do Something, and American Red Cross.

Starbucks is taking action because they believe it is important to take care of the planet. They are building greener stores, recycling and reducing waste, and offer a cup with 10% post consumer recycled paper fiber since 2006. Since 2004, they have been pursuing strategies to address the climate change problem. They also are working to decrease the materials used in their packaging and find new ways to encourage reusable's.
Starbucks wants to create a connection with their customers that is not based only on trying to make a profit. They're trying to demonstrate a commitment to communities where they serve and where customers live. They recognize that customers want a company whose values are similar to their own.
Starbucks is committed to neighborhoods where stores are located to where their coffee is grown. They try to make their community better with community service, youth leadership programs, and community stores. Their community service goal is to mobilize our partners and employees and customers to contribute 1 million hours of community service per year by 2015. The community stores are designed to create a reliable connection of resources for the nonprofit organization, raise awareness of their work, and creates a space for community dialog and engagement.
Starbucks provides their workers with a safe and healthy work environment. Workers have access to portable drinking water, emergency medical care and first aid kits. All machinery is properly labeled. They do not discriminate on race, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, age, parental status, pregnancy, or other factors in hiring practices.
Starbucks is Dunkins' biggest competitor with coffee sales. Over half of Starbucks business is made in coffee sales. Starbucks is currently the largest coffeehouse chain in the world, with 20,891 stores in 62 countries, including 13,279 in the US, 1,324 in Canada, 989 in Japan, 851 in the People's Republic of China, 806 in the United Kingdom, 556 in South Korea, 377 in Mexico, 291 in Taiwan, 206 in the Philippines, 179 in Turkey, 171 in Thailand, and 167 in Germany.
The only experience I have had with Dunkin' Donuts was being a customer. I did find out that at the Roger Williams Zoo, the Dunkin' there is not allowed to put lids on cups or give you a straw because if and animal picks it up, it could be harmful to them.
