There are two species traditionally recognized- Asian and African elephants. They are the largest land mammal on earth.
The length of an Asian elephant is 18-21 feet
and the lifespan of an Asian elephant is 48 years and for the African Elephant it is 60-70 years.
Elephants are herbivorous. They usually live in savannahs, forests, deserts, and marshes.
Habitat loss is one of the key threats facing elephants today. As well as poaching.
At the turn of the 20th century, there were a few million African elephants and 100,000 Asian elephants. Today, there are about 450,000-700,000 African elephants and 35,000-40,000 Asian elephants.
