Clothes and shopping

London is the place for fashion in England. Mary Quant made the first miniskirt here in the 1960s.

In February and September every year, there is London Fashion Week. One of the England's most famous shops is Harrods. You can find many of the other big shops in out-of-town shopping malls, cities and towns all over the country. Many English towns have markets. And you can find the cheapest food in the big supermarkets.

ENGLISH FOOD

The breakfast in England has egg, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and lots of tea.

You can have lunch in an English pubs, sandwich shops and coffee shops.

The English like "afternoon tea". With your cup of tea you get sandwiches and cakes.

For dinner you can go to a restaurant, a pizzeria or Indian restaurants.

SPORTS IN ENGLAND

There are footballs clubs all over England. The big London clubs are Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Rugby is a fast and exciting game. In December you can see the big game between Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

The game of cricket began in England. You can see cricket from April to September.

Every year at the end of June, you can watch the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships, in Wimbledon.

The coast and countryside in England

ENGLAND

You are never far from the sea in England. And you are never very far from some of the most beautiful countryside in the world.

  • On the wonderful long beaches of Northumbria you can go for walks, watch birds and get good views of castles.
  • Yorkshire has two wonderful national parks.
  • In the Norfolk Broads, there is water everywhere, and not hills.
  • Dorset has wonderful walks along the south-west coast. See the amazing Chesil Bank Beach.
  • Cornwall, in the far south-west, has great surfing beaches and wonderful walks on the coast.

CITIES IN ENGLAND

  • Manchester has one of the most famous football clubs in the world: Manchester United. The city has many interesting museums. You can visit The Comedy Store at Deansgate Locks for an evening of laughs.
  • Bath sits between green hills in the south-west of England. The city is famous for its Royal Crescent and other buildings. The Romans built a city with baths. In the nineteenth century rich people came to Bath. Today you can visit the Romans Baths.

CITIES IN ENGLAND

  • London has more than eleven million visitors every year. They visit the most famous buildings: Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, Buckingham Palace. London is full of museums and art galleries, theatres, and clubs.
  • Liverpool stands by the River Mersey on the northwest coast of England. It was the home of the Beatles in the 1960s. In Liverpool there are two famous football clubs, Liverpool and Everton. Liverpool Cathedral at St James Mount is the fifth largest cathedral in the world.

Who are the English?

The name "England" comes from "Angle-land". The Angle and Saxon people came here from Europe in the fifth and sixth centuries.

Before them, the Romans lived here for about four hundred years and made a town called Londinium, today its name is London.

In 1066, England had a new king, he was William of Normandy. Many French people came to England with him.

In the 1980s, people from Vietnam came because they wanted to get away the war in their country. Today nearly fifty million people live in England.

ENGLAND

About twenty-million people visit England every year. Nearly all of them go to London first.

London is a wonderful place, but there are many more exciting and interesting places in the country.

In England there are green hills, quiet villages, long beaches, beautiful old churches and English gardens. And there are exciting big cities with great food, shops, and music.
