Motivation

Colors/Symbols

Gatsby's main motivation for his whole life is Daisy, but not just Daisy, his perfected image of her. Gatsby fell in love with Daisy earlier in his life, and since that time he created a fairytale of her and his life with her. Everything that he does and has done, is for her, his parties, his house, his fortune, everything!

The American Flag

One symbol for Gatsby is the American Flag because he represents the American dream. He is wealthy and succesful on the outside, but has inner struggles.

The color red represents passion, importance, and fire which is what Gatsby has. However, he has this for something that is unrealistic.

The cloud/dream

Purple

"No amount of fire could challenge the fairytale he had stored up in his heart." - Nick Carraway

Gatsby's whole life can be symbolized by a dream. Everything that he wants is never going to come true, but everything he does is to live his dream. It's like Gatsby is wearing rose colored glasses; his mind is in his own dream but his body is in the real world.

The color purple represents things like luxury, inspiration, and wealth. Even though Gatsby doesn't feel luxurious or wealthy because he doesn't have daisy, other people view him this way.

Changes

The main change that Gatsby undergoes happens between him and Nick Carraway. In the book, Nick is the narrarator, so as he learns the reader learns. Because of this, the reader doesn't get to know Gatsby until Nick does. At the begining of the book, Gatsby is very introverted about his personal life. However, as the book nears the end, Nick and the reader learn more and more about Gatsby's motives and history.

Values

For the reader...

Gatsby seems to be a very galmorous and giving character at the begining because of his parties and Nick's descriptions of him. Towards the end, Gatsby seems to be a more unstable character who has a lot of dark secrets.

Gatsby has American Values

Vices/Virtues

Stand out and be the best

At the end of the book, when Gatsby's dad comes for the funeral, he shows Nick Carraway Gatsby's daily schedule from when he was a boy. It had a timed out schedule and general resolves. This shows that even at a young age, Gatsby had the desire to be the best and stand out

Gatsby's bad side

The Good Side of Gatsby

I chose to put the car and phone on this slide because American's are very materialistic.

  • Unrealistic expectations
  • Will do anything for money
  • Doesn't build very many close relationships
  • Very introverted
  • Doesn't share burdens
  • Will do anything for those he loves
  • Careing and giving
  • Organized (ex: his schedules)
  • Shares his fortune (ex: parties)
  • Sympathetic to friends, however he doesn't make many friends

Why I desighned my mind map the way it is...

I chose the spinning wheel with lots of colors, because I think that is how others see Gatsby. However, on his inside he's not as colorful and cheerful. He has hidden secrets, which is why I chose a gold and black center.

Quotes

By: Whitney Bennett

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . . And then one fine morning—

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." - Nick Carraway

This quote is important because it explains what Gatsby's life was. He had a goal that he wanted to achieve, but it just kept getting farther away, and he just kept reverting to the past.

This quote is important because it explains why Gatsby just wants to keep getting richer. One would think that if you were as rich as Gatsby, you wouldn't need more money. However, Gatsby thinks that in order to get Daisy he has to keep going up, or getting more fortunate.

"My life has to be like this, it has to keep going up." - Jay Gatsby

This quote is important because it shows why Gatsby was so likeable. He wasn't perfect and nobody knew who he actually was, but they trusted him because of the way he portrayed himself.

"He had one of those rare smiles with a quality of reassurance in it, that you may come across four or five times in a life time." - Nick Carraway

Oops wet feet!

Wealth no matter what

Gatsby got his wealth through criminal methods, which represents the American ideal of getting rich no matter what.

Would do anything for love

Gatsby doesn't necessarily agree with all the illegal things he is apart of, but he believes that he has to do it so he can be with Daisy.

Outside Vs. Inside

A lot of American's want the "American Dream," and so we all make these fake ouside personality's to make it look like we have it. However, just like Gatsby, none of us have what we want in the inside.

Plan to Succeed

He makes a plan to achieve success and follows it just like America has determination for success.
