What are the effects of captivity on killer whales?

What research says

by grace Williams

The research that I have done has shown the increasing dislike of killer whales in captivity since the 1960's. That captivity kills, there are over a hundred recorded whale deaths at seaworld. That illness are common, along with a collapsed dorsal fin, drilled teeth that are worn down from chewing on the concrete and metal bars, and abnormal behaviors. Which do lead to aggression to the other whales and trainers. There are signs of depression and loneliness among the whales, specifically a large bull named Tilikum. Who is not allowed any human interaction.

Book quotes

“Much as nootka and haida had clobbered him at sealand, some of the florida females-Katina in particular- often raked the newcomer with their teeth.”

2.

The whales aggression in the quote gives direct information that whales show not be in such close areas. That large whales are not meant the be kept in a bathtub with 7 to 10 other whales.

“But as Naomi gradually combed through the papers at HSUS, she realized that seaworld’s gauzy prescription for contentment did not take into account the stress of captivity, which seemed to increase the risk of physical and mental disorders that can produce immune dysfunction, infections, reproductive, problems, and potentially lethal aggression among the whales.”

Art piece

Captivity is not natural for these whales and can cause illnesses, abnormal behaviors, and other problems that could lead to loss of life.

What people say

In the movie it expresses the bad that comes from these large sea mammals in captivity. That specifically at seaworld captivity is advertised as a good thing. It lists many examples of trainers, and whales getting killer or hurt.

"They are bored, lonely, they learn nothing, no social interactions, they go crazy. They become dog like and lose there really why of life. They stop behaving like the creature that they are suppose to be. They get sink, they are feed have no joy. "- Katie williams

What the book says

They freak out, they need more space. - Emma macaulay

Death at Seaworld

by David Kirby

Art pieces

This book questions captivity and seaworld's whale shows. The book compares the life of whales in captivity and the wild. There are significant differences between the life of whales in the wild than at seaworld. The book shows the healthy issues and behavioral problems with the whales living in the confined environment that they are.

I think no matter all that humans do to help they are not happy.- Miu iwabuchi

“....,the female kahana was found dead in a back pool at seaworld San Antonio. She had smashed her head against the concrete wall and hemorrhaged (bleeding in the brain) to death.”

This drawing really shows what life is like in the eyes of the whales. The quotes on the side give the observer a visual of what parks like seaworld are doing to protect their industry.

1.

Illnesses are common in captivity and there is a large percentage of life loss of whales. This is a major example of why captivity is bad and animals change in captivity

What people say

Yes, we still need to learn from them. But limited not for shows and entertainment. - Katie williams

It is not really needed anymore. We know about these animals and should not have them in captivity anymore. - Emma macaulay

Bibliography

All the interviews agreed in the fact that they whales are not healthy were they are and that using whales for entertainment is not right.
