TOP TEN LIST OF ANCIENT CHINESE INVENTIONS

Papermaking

In 105 C.E. Cai Lun, invented paper from bark, cloth and worn fishnet. These materials could be found at very inexpensive prices so it made mass producing a lot easier. During a war between the Tang Dynasty and the Arab Empire, the Arabs captured some Tang soldiers and paper makers. resulting in a paper factory being set up by the Arabs. Thus, spreading paper and paper making ways across the world.

Without paper i wouldnt be able to write in my journal. And trust me, i need to write in that thing. I write in it every night. So paper is extremely important to me. I also prefer to do my school work on paper rather than on the computer just so i can keep a hard copy. There are thousands of people like me out there and we all can vouch for this.

Mechanical Clock

Compass

Toothbrush

In 976 AD the mechanical clock was built during the Song dynasty, in the Third Empire. The invention of the mechanical clock was important because it was more accurate than telling time by water or sun clocks. The Emporer got a team of 12 men to build a clock that was 30 feet high. This clock took 8 years to build.

The mechanical clock is important to me because without it i would have no way to tell time. The mechanical clock lead to digital clocks and lets be honest where would we be without our watches or the time on our computer screen/cell phone. We rely on our little clocks all day to tell us when we should be doing smoething. For example i know that class change is in 20 minutes because of the little clock in the corner of my screen.

Around 1040-1044 there are records of the creation of the "direction finder". A "South pointed fish floating in a bowl of water, aligning itself to the south" floating on water. The invention of the magnetic compass was very important to ancient civilizations in order to find where they were going. Or in the case that they got lost they could follow their was back home.

Without the invention of the compass we probably wouldn't be here. Christopher Columbus used the compass to find North America. The compass is important to me because it gives direction. I often look at the compass in my car solely because I'm interested in knowing which direction were going. I may not use a compass everyday but it definitely was a ]n amazing invention that we still use today.

The bristle tooth brush that we all know and love wasnt invented untill 1498. Before that people used a chew stick to clean their teeth. The chinese people took coarse hairs from the back of a hog's neck. They then attached it to handles made of bone or bamboo. It then became a universal thing to use a bristled tooth brush.

Thank you ancient chinese people! Dental hygene is a huge thing for me; I dont even like going a day without brushing my teeth. And I have a feeling I wouldn't really like the chew stick provided in the photo on the next slide. I know that 1489 isn't really ancient times. However I do think that the toothbrush was the best invention yet!!

Gunpowder

Pasta

Suprisingly Pasta was not invented in italy. It was brought there by Marco Polo via China. The Chinese people have been eating it snce as early as 300 B.C.E. Pasta was an important Chinese cuisine and is still being eaten today. For example Chow Mein noodles are Chinese. Italy would have nothing to be proud of if Pasta hadn't been invented.

Pasta is my favorite food. The invention of pasta is very very important to me. I could eat pasta for days on end. I'm sorry i dont know how else to explain why its important to me.

Huo yao aka gunpowder was invented during the Tang Dynasty around 850 C.E., by an alchamist. Ancient Chinese alchemists spent centuries trying to figure out how to become immortal. One day someone mixed 75 parts saltpeter with 15 parts charcoal and 10 parts sulfur. When exposed to an open flame BOOM and explosion. At first it was used to start fires but then it graduated to being used to blind and burn people.

Gun powder is important to me being I love fireworks! They are my favourite. Every halloweeen, New Years Eve or special occasion my family gets them. They're so neat looking! So withought the invention of gunpowder, I wouldn't have one of my favourite things. I also like the fact that everyone gathers together at the waterfront to go watch them in the summer.

Porcelain

Kite

Precelain is prized for its beauty and durability. During teh Shang period Porcelain was first made. Chinese porcelain was known for its bright and beautiful colours aswell as its usefullness. Porcelain is sop durable that even pieces made in the Han dynasty are still have bright colours.

Porcelain is important to me because i grew up around it. My grandparents always had porcelain dolls or jars hanging around the house. There wasn't a time where i didn't see porcelain, when i was a kid. My grandmother even bought me my very own porcelain doll for my 5th birthday.

Umbrella

Tea Production

During the fourth century B.C., Gongshu Ban and Mo Di invented the kite. They made bird like kites that dipped and gilded through the wind. Kites became useful in military missions, serving as unmanned drones to deliver loads of gunpowder to enemy fortifications. In 1232 the Chinese used kites as propaganda to urge captured chinese to rebel. But now days kites are mostly used for pleasure.

I have a huge kite in the shape of an airplane that I fly every summer in Tofino. The winds on long beach are perfect for kite flying. My family uses kites for purely pleasure, no war signals. Many other families use kites at the beach and in parks, they are a good way to have fun.

The umbrealla was frist invented in 3500 B.C.E. The use was not only to keep themselves dry when it rained but to protect themselves from the suns rays. The umbrellas backthen were made of bamboo and oil paper. Today we use umbrellas but we have upgraded them to make them smaller and more compact.

Umbrellas are important to me, because I hate being wet. I use an umbrella everytime it rains. They keep me nice and dry. I personally own about 8 umbrellas let alone how many my whole family owns. You can buy so many different ones, a variety of colours, sizes and even some have lights.

In 2737 BCE Shennong whose name means the Divine Farmer in Chinese discovered that if you put leaves in water it is very refreshing. In The beginning tea was used for medical purposes, but soon it became a drink for all social classes to enjoy. Tea became very popular in the monasteries becasue the caffine kept the monks awake for long hours during meditation.

Tea is important to me because it keeps me awake. I literally drink it everyday. I don't like the bitter taste of coffee so having a nice cup of tea or two helps me stay awake for school and work. Tea helps calm me down after a stressful day or if im feeling sick I drink ginger tea to calm my stomach. It has so many purposes in my life.
