  • 18th : emergence of the press
  • First newspaper : The Daily Courant, 1702
  • First English journalist to achieve national importance : Daniel Defoe
  • 19th century : 52 different newspapers in London
  • 20th appearance and competition with the radio + TV

Evolution : 20th : dvlpt of "press barons" ; newspapers still very important in british life (maybe more than in France)

Two categories :

  • the more conservative and political newspapers : broadsheets, "the quality press",
  • less serious newspapers : tabloids, "the popular press".

  • ambiguous relationship with political parties : domination and power
  • follows the "New of the World" case : lawbreaking actions
