Democracy in Greece

By Micah McClure

How Could People Participate in the Democracy?

Who came up with democracy?

The Fall of Democracy in Ancient Greece

The Athenian leader Cleisthenes introduced democracy in 507 BC. He called it demokratia which means rule by the people.

The only people that could participate in the democracy were adult male citizens. Women, slaves and resident foreigners were not allowed to participate in the government.

The democracy in ancient Greece ended around 338 BC, when the King of Macedonia, Phillip II, conquered Greece and became the ruler. The democracy had lasted 186 years in ancient Greece.

How did the Democracy Help Greece?

The Athenians from Athens developed the first ever democratic government after already having a monarchy, aristocracy, and tyranny.

In the Greek Democracy, the people who met the criteria could participate in the government. Everyone who participated had equal political rights and they could take part directly in the democracy. They decided what laws were passed and resolved issues that came up.

The democracy gave power to the people. The people who could participate were able to fairly elect a ruler and it let them propose and vote on laws themselves. It gave them stability in the government and it led to good rulers being selected by the people.
