Vigario geral massacre

- In 1993, 21 people were killed in the shanty town of Vigario Geral outside of Rio De Janeiro.
- They were allegedly killed as payback for the murder of four police officers two days earlier.
- Although the attackers were hooded, evidence was found that the attack was carried out by police.
- Among the people killed was a 15-year old girl and her family.

-Started with a fight between two prisoners
-Troops went in to break up the rebellion that had begun.
-After their "work" 111 prisoners were dead.
-Evidence found later shows that the police officers killed many innocent people. They even tried to erase evidence of the killings.
-Most officers got away with out charges. A couple were sentenced to life in prison.
