Self Awareness

Letter to Myself

Who Am I Activity

Dear Ria,

In July 2015, you are setting these goal to achieve within six months:

• Gain more confidence and clinical nursing experience by successfully completing all your ESN hours and final preceptorship in Fall of 2015.

• Graduate BSN-PB Nursing Program at KPU in December 2015.

• Apply and work as a new grad on a medical/surgical unit after graduation.

• Review through HURST and successfully write the NCLEX-RN Exam in January-February 2016.

• Work as a licensed RN.

Take it one day at a time! These goals are S-M-A-R-T!! ;)

You can do it, through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13)!

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the LORD, not for men (Colossians 3:23)”.

Love,

Ria

My values, work priorities, skill and attributes reflect my beliefs, strengths, and capabilities. By being self-aware, I am able to identify career positions that best suit me (i.e. recognize where I can reach my best potential and make a difference in people’s lives).

My Top Five Values

• God

• Reaching my best potential

• Meaningful career

• Family and friends

• Stable lifestyle

Opportunity Awareness

PEST Analysis

Exploring different available opportunities through networking, researching, and appraising current job prospects, allows me to better visualize, plan, and take action to achieve my career goals.

Political, Economic, Social, Technological factors that may affect my career.

Appraising Opportunities

Economic

What are the economic factors that may affect your career?

Economic factors that may affect my career are volatility of markets (for health care-related businesses) and availability of stable job positions for my ideal career as a perinatal nurse/NP.

Technological

My Attributes

Political

How will technological advances in health care impact on your future career options?

I believe Information Technology (IT) skills are highly important in the health care field, and in all nursing settings. It is important to keep up-to-date with education and hands-on training for new information management and tools. Regarding my future career options, technology advances will allow more opportunities for delivery of holistic health care as I believe technology should be designed to make nursing more effective, efficient, and human-centered.

What is good about the changes?

Changes allow for varied work, makes work more exciting with new challenges (i.e. won’t get bored).

What is not so good about the changes?

Changes without appropriate support can make work life more demanding and stressful, resulting in burn out and compassion fatigue.

What opportunities are there for you personally?

  • Perinatal/Maternity Nursing specialty
  • Nurse Practitioner role

What do you need to do to enhance your exposure to the new opportunities?

  • Need to take further education (e.g. BCIT, UBC programs)
  • Shadowing or connecting with a mentor with experience in these areas

What political factors might affect your career?

BC’s health care priorities include delivering patient-centered care; maintaining a high-performing, sustainable health system; focusing on primary and community care; and improving rural health services. These visions, policies, and priorities can positively affect my career if they are successfully implemented. I believe my job as part of the health care team is to contribute and support positive changes that will effectively improve health for all.

Social

Are there social trends that impact on your career?

The aging population trend is becoming more prominent in many countries, especially the higher-income level regions due to different factors. This can affect my career plan as I want to specialize in maternity nursing. I may have to consider other possibilities (e.g. medical-surgical, ER, ICU, community nursing) if necessary.
