Hospitality

-When Odysseus and his crew land on the island of Aiolia, the god Aiolos lets them stay in his home for a month, and gives them gifts as well.

-After Odysseus make a deal with Circe, she invites Odysseus' crew to stay with her. They end up staying for an entire year.

Fate and Free Will

-After they are blown away from Ithaca, the men come back to Aiolos to ask again for wind to take them home. Aiolos though realizes that it is not their fate to have returned, so he chooses to not intervene.

-After the event with Circe is sorted out, she tells them that they must go to Erebus to see the prophet Teiresias before they can return home.

Lies and Deceit

-When Odysseus is asleep after steering the ship for many days, his men think that Odysseus

is hiding something from him. They open up the bag of winds and get blown all the way to a sea they don't know.

-When they reach the island of Aiaia, the goddess Circe invites Odysseus' men to come in and feast with her. She puts powerful drugs into their food and drink, and then turns them into pigs.

Suffering

-After they get blown away from Ithaca. Odysseus is in complete despair and argues with himself about either jumping in to the sea and drowning himself, and staying alive while having to suffer so much.

  • The giants also took and ate many of Odysseus’ men.

  • Odysseus and a few of his men escape, traveling to Circe’s island, Aeaecia.

  • Odysseus and his men arrive at the island of Aeolia, where the god Aeolus lives.

  • They stay for a month, and when they are ready to go Aeolus gives them a bag of mixed winds that blow in the wrong direction, not taking them home.

  • As they neared Ithaca, Odysseus was sleeping and his men opened Aeolus’ bag of wind, thinking it was gold, and it blew them back to Aeolia, where Aeolus kicks them off the island, thinking the gods have cursed them.

  • They are tired, and they row to Laestrygonia, where they only see smoke, no people.
