Source Analysis

This is a Primary Source, written in 1934.This source shows a group of Indigenous children at the Darwin half-caste home, up for adoption. This source would have been written to target white families and adults, to advertise and encourage them to adopt Indigenous children, in order to teach them the "White" way of living. It uses empathetic language to encourage them to do so, and their message is public. The photo shows us how the children were treated in that period of time, and what they were going through. The source also consists of a hand written section at the bottom, by a white person at the time, stating which child they would like to adopt. This source is reliable as it was written at the time of the Stolen Generation period, therefore showing an accurate photograph of the children. However, the article below would be biased towards the 'Whites' view of the situation, which wouldn't be an accurate representation of the events that took place at the time.

The Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Girls 1912-74

The Stolen Generation

In 1912, the Aborigines Protection Board established the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home for Aboriginal girls (aged 7-14), who had been removed from their families to train as domestic servants for white families. At the home, authorities; denied the girls any contact with their families, forbade the use of their traditional languages, and punished anyone who went against these, and many other rules. The instructors taught the girls that they were white and that Indigenous Australians were inferior. Once they were in domestic service, these girls; were paid infrequently if at all, worked long hours with little personal freedom, and were at risk of sexual abuse.

Assimilation

By Sarah Collinson

In 1937, the Federal Government introduced a policy of Assimilation. This meant that the Aboriginal people who were not of 'Pure Blood', had to confirm to the attitudes, customs and beliefs of the white majority. They did this by removing children from their families, hence known as the Stolen generation. The intent of this policy was to eradicate the Indigenous population.

The Government Policy that caused it

What was the Stolen Generation?

The Government:

- Established 'Protection Acts' which gave them the power over Aboriginal peoples rights.

- They established Protection Boards who administered taking the children from their families and putting them into homes.

- Gave power to the Police and Protection officers to implement the Protection laws.

- They became legal guardians of the children, taking the role away from the Aboriginal parents.

The officials claimed that the Aboriginal parents had abused and neglected their children, and that they could provide the children with a better life than they would have with their family.

The Stolen Generation was the period in time between 1910 and 1970, where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were separated from their families by force, by the Australian State and Territory Governments. The Governments took children and babies, and placed them in government missionary run training institutions, put them up for adoption or placed them in foster homes.

What was the Stolen Generation? - Cont.

They targeted mixed race children, and expected them to assimilate with the white race as servants and labourers. They hoped that these children would have babies with white partners, so eventually over generations the Indigenous population of Australia would eventually die out.
