Light and Dark Symbolism

Light Symbols

Symbolism-the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.

Light Symbolism-used for truth, enlightenment, safety, innocence, or as a holy image. It can stand for good or purity.

Dark Symbolism-used for dishonesty, evil, or danger. It stands for impurity and corruption.

The Sky and Ocean

After Simon's death the sky fills with stars. This represents him leaving the island and going to Heaven. Also, the ocean shines from the reflection showing this as well.

The conch is a light symbol because it represents democracy, order, and peace.

Piggy's Glasses

The Fire is a light symbol because it symbolizes the idea of being rescued. It is the hope or light shining through the darkness of the island.

Piggy's glasses are a light symbol because they are what creates fire. The fire is the boys' only hope of being rescued and also their only resource for cooking food.

The Beast

The beast is an example of dark symbolism because it represents the evil within the boys.
