Back in the Days.

1920s

Ku Klux Klan

The Klans "Invisible Empire" had perhaps 4 to 5 million members.

KKK promoted hatred of African Americans.

Prohibition and Crime of the 1920s.

During Prohibition, many ordinary Americans rich and poor became lawbreakers. Ignoring the Volstead Act, they found creative ways to hide alcohol and got into the speakeasies.

Federal agents destroy a still to manufacture illegal alcohol. Although these "feds" worked tireslessly, there were not enough of them to enforce Prohibition effectively.

The Harlem Renaissance.

A truly indigenous American musical form, jazz is a musical form based on improvisation.

Jazz was more than a musical style. It was also a symbol of Roaring Twenties. It was part of the Prohibiton era, played in speakeasies and nightspots in N.Y., Chicago, St.Louis and L.A.

They burned crosses, boycotted businesses owned by anyone who was Jewish, Catholic, or African American and terrorized citizens in the darkness of night.

It was F. Scott Fitzgerald who called the 1920s the "Jazz Age." However, it was African Americans who gave the age its jazz.

Prohibition encouraged a new breed of organized crime. Racketeers like Al Capone and his rival, Bugs Moran thumbled their nose at the law and ruthessly mudered their competitors.
